Fanzines Reprints Review

The new ‘Famous Fantastic Mysteries’

'Famous Fantastic Mysteries' (Spring 2017)Famous Fantastic Mysteries (FFM) was a long-running pulp first published by Munsey then Popular Publications from 1939 to 1953. This popular pulp reprinted classic fantasy and sf stories, not just from Munsey but from other publishers. It was so popular it spawned a spinoff, Fantastic Novels.

Recently in 2016, Altus Press which has access to most of the Munsey and Popular materials, relaunched Famous Fantastic Mysteries. But instead of a focus on fantasy and sf, it would focus on the “weird menace” works from Popular. The first issue, Fall 2016, reprinted solely from Terror Tales, along with a new work by Kimberly B. Richardson. I haven’t picked up this one yet, so don’t know what kind of story it is.

The second issue is dated Spring 2017. The magazine will be an annual, so we should see another this year. This issue has reprints from Dime Mystery and Horror Stories. A new story is from Lester Dent, “The Stone Spook of Grandpa Plott.” Apparently this new story was written for the slick magazines, but didn’t sell. I’m not sure why as it was pretty good.

I’m not a big fan of weird menace stories, but if you are, check out this new reprint magazine.
