Fanzines Pulps Review

‘Pulp Fan’ #4

Thanks in large part to the success of the previous issue, we recently got the fourth issue of Pulp Fan, a great pulp fanzine from Jim Main, dated December 2021. He is already working on the fifth issue.

"Pulp Fan" #4As with previous issues, this one is done on slick paper with color covers and color interiors. Again, it’s a nice package. We get a lot of artwork, both new and reprinted (various covers). The cover is by Allen Freeman and is supposed to be The Avenger, or maybe a “New Avenger.” I guess after his features were restored. The rest of the issue is a quartet of articles and variety of artwork by Jim Ordolis, John Lambert, Scott McClung, Frank Hamilton, and others.

First up is an article on The Avenger by New Pulp author Teel James Glenn. He tells of the creation of the character, along the way giving a good overview of the creation of several of Street & Smith’s pulp heroes. We get galleries of both the pulp and later paperback book, comicbooks, and collection covers.

Next up is a piece by Will Murray, a “lost” Doc Savage intermission, which was intended for volume six of Sanctum Books collection (with The Polar Treasure and Pirate of the Pacific). But there was no room, so an abbreviated version was run. This is the full version. We also get some covers and associated artwork.

Margaret Brundage is, hopefully, well known within the pulp world for her sensational, and sensual, cover artwork for Weird Tales and other magazines. Michael Housel provides an overview of her life. And we get examples of her work.

Recently, a bridge in La Plata, Mo., was dedicated to Lester Dent. Mark Lambert reports on this event. There are several photos and a local newspaper article.

It’s another great issue. Contact Jim Main via his email address or on his Facebook page. He may still have copies of this and prior issues, if not he has PDFs. He is already working on the next issue, and supposedly it will focus on Pat Savage. I look forward to it.
