H. Warner Munn (1903-81) was an author of horror and fantasy works, and a member of the Lovecraft circle of friends. He is probably best known for his early work for Weird Tales.
His most well-known works are “Tales of the Werewolf Clan” and his unfinished “Merlin’s Godson” series. The “Tales of the Werewolf Clan” series of stories started off with a comment in a letter from H.P. Lovecraft, who noted that we’ve never had a story told from the perspective of the werewolf, only its victims. This led to this series, which first started as short stories in Weird Tales from 1925 to 1931, and was later collected into three books.
Steeger Books finally put out the complete series of stories in a single volume: Tales of the Werewolf Clan, which contains a foreword by Munn and another by his grandson, John Munn.
Forget what you know of werewolves. Forget the Wolf Man movies, or how werewolves are depicted in things like Twilight or the Underworld movies.
Things start in Poland with Wladislaw Brenryk. Then, it continues with what his daughter did to save her life, and the agreement she made. The storyline moves through the centuries until we get to modern times and the final descendant of the “werewolf clan” and his confrontation with “the Master” that caused his clan to be so cursed.
This is an important series from the pulps, and it’s great that we finally get the complete series collected. Even if you aren’t a werewolf fan, this is a great series.
