{"id":1223,"date":"2014-02-19T10:00:16","date_gmt":"2014-02-19T15:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/?p=1223"},"modified":"2026-05-04T17:20:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T21:20:12","slug":"review-tales-of-the-shadowmen-vol-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/2014\/02\/19\/review-tales-of-the-shadowmen-vol-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: &#8216;Tales of the Shadowmen, Vol. 3&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Tales of the Shadowmen: Danse Macabre&#8221; (2006) is the third volume of this eclectic anthology series from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackcoatpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Coat Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2193\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2014\/02\/tales-of-the-shadowmen-3.jpg\" alt=\"Tales of the Shadowmen: Danse Macabre\" width=\"200\" height=\"303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2014\/02\/tales-of-the-shadowmen-3.jpg 200w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2014\/02\/tales-of-the-shadowmen-3-198x300.jpg 198w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>It makes use of a concept of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-info\/pulp-articles\/wold-newton\/\">Philip Jose Farmer<\/a><\/strong> that has various fictional characters set in the same fictional universe, thus they are able to met and interact. Don&#8217;t make the assumption that all the stories are linked. They often are not. Most are standalone, can usually be read in any order.<\/p>\n<p>What can be daunting is that this series uses characters of popular literary culture (mainly written, but sometimes film and TV), and not &#8220;high brow&#8221; characters. And the characters are taken from American, British, French, and other countries&#8217; fiction, so often if you&#8217;re not familiar with those characters, it can be confusing. or, it could lead you to start reading the original stories of these characters, which BCP does (such as <strong>Fantomas<\/strong>, <strong>Nyctalope<\/strong>, the <strong>Black Coats<\/strong>, <strong>Belphegor<\/strong>, <strong>Judex<\/strong>, and many more).<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->The stories in this collection are:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew Baugh<\/strong>: &#8220;The Heart of the Moon&#8221; has a group including <strong>Telzey Amberdon<\/strong> (a character created by <strong>James Schmitz<\/strong>), <strong>Captain Kronos<\/strong> (the vampire hunter from the Hammer film), <strong>Solomon Kane<\/strong> (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/HowardRobertE\">Robert E. Howard<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s Puritan adventurer), <strong>Maciste<\/strong>, and <strong>Dr. Omega<\/strong> (the early French SF character who resembles the <strong>First Doctor<\/strong>) visiting Selene the Vampire City of <strong>Paul Feval<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alfredo Castelli<\/strong>: &#8220;Long Live Fantomas!&#8221; is an interesting tale looking at a Fantomas who existed before the more familiar Fantomas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bill Cunningham<\/strong>: &#8220;Next!&#8221; is a short tale of <strong>Barbarella<\/strong> meeting <strong>Captain Kirk<\/strong>. And a few others.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran\u00e7ois Darnaudet<\/strong> &amp; <strong>J.-M. Lofficier<\/strong>: &#8220;Au Vent Mauvais&#8230;&#8221; has <strong>Madame Atomos<\/strong>, a vengeful Japanese scientist who plotted against the United States in a series of French novels (now reprinted by Black Coat Press) working with <strong>Zemba III<\/strong>, descendant of <strong>Zemba<\/strong>, the French supercrook that fought <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/the-links\/theshadow\/\">The Shadow<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Paul Di Filippo<\/strong>: &#8220;Return to the 20th Century&#8221; is a strange tale that makes use of <strong>Robida<\/strong>&#8216;s illustrations of what he thought the 20th Century would be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Win Scott Eckert<\/strong>: &#8220;Les L\u00e8vres Rouges,&#8221; another <strong>Doc Ardan<\/strong> (alias of Doc Savage) story by Eckert, follows the story from the previous volume and has Ardan, with the involvement of other characters, including <strong>Nestor Burma<\/strong>, a French noir detective, retrieving the Eye of Oran from <strong>Arsene Lupin<\/strong>&#8216;s daughter <strong>Adelaide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Micah Harris<\/strong>: &#8220;The Ape Gigans&#8221; tells of the adventuress <strong>Becky Sharp<\/strong> (from &#8220;Vanity Fair&#8221;), along with <strong>Professor Lindenbrock<\/strong> (from <strong>Jules Verne<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;Journey to the Center of the Earth&#8221;) traveling to Skull Island.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Greg Gick<\/strong>: &#8220;Beware the Beasts&#8221; has <strong>Dr. Omega<\/strong> visiting the Planet of the Apes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Travis Hiltz<\/strong>: &#8220;A Dance of Night and Death&#8221; shows a class between Fantomas and <strong>Irma Vep<\/strong> (leader of Les Vampires, the criminal group).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rick Lai<\/strong>: &#8220;The Lady in the Black Gloves&#8221; is a follow-on to his story from the previous volume dealing with <strong>Irene Chupin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jean-Marc Lofficier<\/strong>: &#8220;The Murder of Randolph Carter&#8221; has Belgium detective <strong>Hercule Poirot<\/strong> dealing with his first case involving the horrors from beyond space.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Xavier Maum\u00e9jean<\/strong>: &#8220;A Day in the Life of Mrs. Atomos&#8221; is a sort of in-between story of <strong>Madame Atomos<\/strong>, and her encounters with other female villains such as <strong>Sumuru<\/strong> (created by <strong>Sax Rohmer<\/strong>), <strong>Madame Hydra<\/strong>, and <strong>Modesty Blaise<\/strong> (well known British thief turned adventurers\/spy).<\/p>\n<p><strong>David A. McIntee<\/strong>: &#8220;Bullets Over Bombay&#8221; makes use of <strong>Dr. Myst\u00e8re<\/strong>, the Hindu adventurer and scientist from French literature, a <strong>Captain Nemo<\/strong>-like character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brad Mengel<\/strong>: &#8220;All&#8217;s Fair&#8230;&#8221; is a short tale having <strong>P&#8217;Gell<\/strong> (from <strong>Will Eisner<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Spirit<\/strong> comics) outwitting such characters as <strong>James Bond<\/strong>, <strong>L&#8217;Ombre<\/strong> (French secret agent), <strong>OSS 117<\/strong> (European spy).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Moorcock<\/strong>: &#8220;The Affair of the Bassin Les Hivers&#8221; has <strong>Zenith the Albino<\/strong> (a foe of <strong>Sexton Blake<\/strong> whom Moorcock has also tied into his own universe of characters) meeting a variety of French characters such as <strong>Inspector Lapointe<\/strong>, <strong>Vautrin<\/strong>, and <strong>Irma Vep<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Peel<\/strong>: &#8220;The Successful Failure&#8221; has amateur detective <strong>Isidore Beautrelet<\/strong> (who nearly outsmarted both Arsene Lupin and Sherlock Holmes) teaming up with British adventurer <strong>Biggles<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Joseph Altairac<\/strong> &amp; <strong>Jean-Luc Rivera<\/strong>: &#8220;The Butterfly Files&#8221; is another story with Madame Atomos, this time meeting FBI Special Agent <strong>William Mulder<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chris Roberson<\/strong>: &#8220;The Famous Ape&#8221; is an interesting story set in a world of anthropomorphic animals, such as shown in the world of <strong>Babar the Elephant<\/strong>. This one focuses on <strong>Curious George<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Robert L. Robinson Jr.<\/strong>: &#8220;Two Hunters&#8221; has Judex (the early French silent movie character that is similar to The Shadow) meeting <strong>Tarzan<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brian Stableford<\/strong>: &#8220;The Child-Stealers&#8221; (second part of &#8220;The Empire Of The Necromancers&#8221;) starring <strong>Cagliostro<\/strong>, Paul Feval&#8217;s super criminal <strong>John Devil<\/strong> and his foe, <strong>Inspector Gregory Temple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the volume is information on the characters used and who created them, though this may not help point you to where they are from. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> is most useful here, along with Black Coat Press&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolfrenchcomics.com\/wnu1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Wold Newton site<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolfrenchcomics.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cool French Comics site<\/a>). The &#8220;Starring&#8221; section lists the characters who appear in the story, &#8220;Co-starring&#8221; lists characters mentioned in the story, and &#8220;Also Starring&#8221; lists places and things that appear or are mentioned in the story.<\/p>\n<p>I have the previous volumes and always look forward to the next in this annual series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Tales of the Shadowmen: Danse Macabre&#8221; (2006) is the third volume of this eclectic anthology series from Black Coat Press.
