{"id":1227,"date":"2014-04-23T10:00:32","date_gmt":"2014-04-23T14:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/?p=1227"},"modified":"2022-01-02T11:30:43","modified_gmt":"2022-01-02T16:30:43","slug":"review-tales-of-the-shadowmen-vol-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/2014\/04\/23\/review-tales-of-the-shadowmen-vol-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Review: &#8216;Tales of the Shadowmen, Vol. 5&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2449\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2013\/11\/tales-of-the-shadowmen-vol-5.jpg\" alt=\"Tales of the Shadowmen, Vol. 5\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>&#8220;Tales of the Shadowmen: The Vampires of Paris&#8221; (2009) is the fifth volume of this eclectic anthology series from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackcoatpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Coat Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Based on <strong>Philip Jos\u00e9 Farmer<\/strong>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-info\/pulp-articles\/wold-newton\/\">Wold Newton theories<\/a>, this collection includes:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Matthew Baugh<\/strong>: &#8220;The Way of the Crane&#8221; has <strong>Madame Atomos<\/strong> (the vengeful Japanese scientist from a series of French sf novels) try to recruit the <strong>Green Hornet<\/strong>&#8216;s associate <strong>Kato<\/strong> into her campaign against the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Michelle Bigot<\/strong>: &#8220;The Tarot of the Shadowmen&#8221; an interesting art portfolio depicting various heroes and villains as the <strong>Major Arcana<\/strong> of the Tarot.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u2022\u00a0<strong>Christopher Paul Carey<\/strong> and <strong>Win Scott Eckert<\/strong>: &#8220;Iron and Bronze&#8221; has <strong>Hareton Ironcastle<\/strong> (an adventurer from a French sf novel later revamped by Farmer) visiting a lost colony of Atlantis located in the Hoggarth Mountains in north Africa. <strong>Doc Ardan<\/strong> (an early French sf character turned into a alias for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/the-links\/docsavage\/\">Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong>) shows up.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>G.L. Gick<\/strong>: &#8220;Tros Must Be Crazy!&#8221; has <strong>Tros of Samothrace<\/strong> visit a certain village of indomitable Gauls located in Brittany.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Micah Harris<\/strong>: &#8220;May the Ground Not Consume Thee&#8230;&#8221; has early literary vampire <strong>Lord Ruthven<\/strong> (from the novel of the same name) going up against the <strong>Count of Monte-Cristo<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Tom Kane<\/strong>: &#8220;The Knave of Diamonds&#8221; is an interesting little story that brings together <strong>James Bond<\/strong> villain <strong>Scaramanga<\/strong> and <strong>O<\/strong> (from &#8220;Story of O&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Lovern Kindzierski<\/strong>: &#8220;Perils Over Paris&#8221; has <strong>Fascinax<\/strong> (an English doctor given mental powers in India who started in a French pulp series) going up against <strong>Irma Vep<\/strong> (leader of a group of criminals called <strong>Les Vampires<\/strong> from the French silent serial). This story ties into the cover of this volume.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Rick Lai<\/strong>: &#8220;All Predators Great and Small&#8221; is a story with <strong>Josephine Balsamo<\/strong> (the Countess Cagliostro who opposed <strong>Arsene Lupin<\/strong>) and her ancestors dealing with vampires, like <strong>Dracula<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Roman Leary<\/strong>: &#8220;The Heart of a Man&#8221; is a story with the <strong>Nyctalope<\/strong> (the early French proto-superhero), now living in exile in South America. Bond villain <strong>Blofeld<\/strong> tries to recruit him for SPECTRE.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Alain le Bussy<\/strong>: &#8220;A Matter Without Gravity&#8221; has <strong>Sherlock Holmes<\/strong> encounter a couple of characters from the stories of <strong>H.G. Wells<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Jean-Marc Lofficier<\/strong>: &#8220;Madame Atomos&#8217; Holidays,&#8221; another story with Madame Atomos that also features <strong>Bob Morane<\/strong>&#8216;s foe, the <strong>Yellow Shadow<\/strong>. (Bob Morane is an interesting post-war French adventurer who has a lot of sf adventures and goes after Bond-like villains like the Yellow Shadow.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Randy Lofficier<\/strong>: &#8220;The English Gentleman&#8217;s Ball&#8221; deals more with the Nyctalope&#8217;s future wife <strong>Sylvie MacDhul<\/strong>. Here, the <strong>Phantom Angel<\/strong> (really, <strong>Sleeping Beauty<\/strong>, who was awaken by Doc Ardan in &#8220;Tales&#8221; #4), works to rescue her from her evil stepmother, revealed to be <strong>Belphegor<\/strong>, the Phantom of the Louvre (villain of the French serial &#8220;Belphegor,&#8221; see my posting on the translation of it). Also appearing are <strong>Jeeves<\/strong> and <strong>Bertie Wooster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Xavier Maum\u00e9jean<\/strong>: &#8220;The Most Exciting Game&#8221; has <strong>Count Zaroff<\/strong> (the renegade Russian Count from the movie where he hunts down shipwreck victims on his island) dealing with some Serpent Men in New York, with a little assistance from <strong>Margo Lane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Jess Nevins<\/strong>: &#8220;A Root That Beareth Gall and Worms&#8221; has <strong>Monsieur Lecoq<\/strong> (the early French detective) traveling to Mexico where he encounters <strong>Dr. Loveless<\/strong> and <strong>Alejandro de la Vega<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>John Peel<\/strong>: &#8220;The Dynamics of an Asteroid&#8221; finds <strong>Doctor Omega<\/strong> (an early French sf character who is very similar to the <strong>First Doctor<\/strong>) dealing with <strong>Professor Moriarty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Frank Schildiner<\/strong>: &#8220;The Smoking Mirror&#8221; has <strong>Jean Kariven<\/strong> (an archaeologist who investigates &#8220;ancient astronaut&#8221; stories, which in his series are real), a sort of forerunner to <strong>Martin Mystery<\/strong> (an interesting Italian comic book character), in New York.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Stuart Shiffman<\/strong>: &#8220;The Milkman Cometh&#8221; has <strong>Tevye the Milkman<\/strong> (basis for the &#8220;Fiddler on the Roof&#8221;) meeting such characters as <strong>Rouletabille<\/strong> (French journalist and detective), Sherlock Holmes and <strong>Ivan Dragomiloff<\/strong> (head of the Assassination Bureau, Ltd.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>David L. Vineyard<\/strong>: &#8220;The Jade Buddha&#8221; is a story of Arsene Lupin while he is in Saigon. There, he encounters characters like H<strong>anoi Shan<\/strong> and others.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Brian Stableford<\/strong>: &#8220;The Vampire in Paris&#8221; (Part IV of &#8220;The Empire of the Necromancers&#8221;) starring <strong>Gregory Temple<\/strong> and others from stories like &#8220;John Devil,&#8221; etc.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the volume is information on the characters used and who created them, though this may not help point you to where they are from. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wikipedia.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> is most useful here, along with Black Coat Press&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolfrenchcomics.com\/wnu1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">French Wold Newton site<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolfrenchcomics.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cool French Comics site<\/a>).
