Price<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/cryptic-publications\/\">Cryptic Publications<\/a> in the late 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-1.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15033]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-16766\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-1-652x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Pulse Pounding Adventure Stories #1\" width=\"350\" height=\"550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-1-652x1024.jpg 652w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-1-191x300.jpg 191w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-1-768x1206.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-1.jpg 955w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>For those not aware, Robert M. Price is a religious scholar and former Baptist minister who is also a writer and editor in the area of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/h-p-lovecraft\/\">H.P. Lovecraft<\/a><\/strong> studies, putting out numerous anthologies, many from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chaosium.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chaosium<\/a>. He is the editor (and at times publisher) of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/crypt-of-cthulhu\/\">Crypt of Cthulhu<\/a><\/em> and other magazines.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1980s, he expanded Cryptic Publications, putting out <em>Risque Stories<\/em> (six issues), <em>Shudder Stories<\/em> (nine issues), <em>Revelations from Yuggoth<\/em> (three issues), <em>Astro-Adventures<\/em> (eight issues), <em>Lurid Confessions<\/em> (one issue), and several one-off chapbooks. Cryptic served as the publisher of <em>Crypt of Cthulhu<\/em> from #50-75 (1987-90), after which it moved to <a href=\"https:\/\/necropress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Necronomicon Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like all the publications of Cryptic, these are chapbook-size magazines, saddle stitched, with colored-paper covers with black-and-white art. Both have cover art by <strong>Stephen Fabian<\/strong>, and contain new and classic pulp stories with a focus on adventure stories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#1 (December 1986)<\/strong> has the following:<\/p>\n<p>First up is \u201cIntrigue in Kurdistan,\u201d an unfinished <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/el-borak\/\">El Borak<\/a><\/strong> story by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-e-howard\/\">Robert E. Howard<\/a><\/strong> that hadn\u2019t previously been published.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/richard-tierney\/\">Richard Tierney<\/a><\/strong> (1936-2022) is \u201cThe Blade of the Slayer,\u201d a story of his <strong>Simon of Gitta<\/strong>. This is also a first appearance of this sword-and-sorcery story.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/carl-jacobi\/\">Carl Jacobi<\/a><\/strong> is \u201cThe Dark Circle.\u201d While this story was written in the 1930s, this is its first publication, as it was rejected by several magazines at the time. It\u2019s a story of pearl diving in the South Pacific.<\/p>\n<p>Another original story is \u201cDrums of the Bizango\u201d by <strong>Marc A. Cerasini<\/strong> and <strong>Charles Hoffman<\/strong>, which makes use of REH\u2019s <strong>John Gorman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And finally from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/manly-wade-wellman\/\">Manly Wade Wellman<\/a><\/strong> is one of his <strong>Hok<\/strong> stories, \u201cThe Love of Oloana.\u201d It first appeared in a revised form as a chapter of <em>Battle in the Dawn<\/em>. For those not aware, Hok is intended to have been the inspiration of <strong>Hercules<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-2.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15033]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-16767\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-2-664x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Pulse Pounding Adventure Stories #2\" width=\"350\" height=\"540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-2-664x1024.jpg 664w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-2-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-2-768x1185.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/10\/pulse-pounding-adventure-stories-2.jpg 972w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><strong>#2 (December 1987)<\/strong> has the following:<\/p>\n<p>We get another Simon of Gitta story from Richard Tierney: \u201cThe Treasure of Horemkhu.\u201d All the Simon stories up to that point would be reprinted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/chaosium\/\">Chaosium<\/a> collection <em>The Scroll of Thoth: Simon Magus and the Great Old Ones<\/em> in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Another of Carl Jacobi\u2019s unpublished works, \u201cYour Witness, Tuan\u201d was originally written around 1936 or \u201937. It&#8217;s another South Seas tale.<\/p>\n<p>From the late <strong>C.J. Henderson<\/strong> is \u201cA Desert Story.\u201d It\u2019s set in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>A reprint from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">West<\/em> magazine (January 1943) by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-bloch\/\">Robert Bloch<\/a><\/strong> is \u201cIndian Sign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>We are told in the editorial of the second issue that it would be the last, due to the other projects they were doing. So may have been a combination of poor sales along with the other publications they were doing. Too bad it didn\u2019t last longer.<\/p>\n<p>If you look around, you can find issues. And you may want to get them, as several of these stories have never been reprinted. I picked up mine off eBay, but know of another pulp reprinter\/vendor with copies available.<\/p>\n<p>And take a look at their other publications as well.
