We get some stand-alone works, as well as volumes of various sub-series. This selection seems very heavy on crime and detective stories and series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/return-of-george-washington.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15410]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-15463\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/return-of-george-washington-679x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Return of George Washington\" width=\"350\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/return-of-george-washington-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/return-of-george-washington-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/return-of-george-washington-768x1158.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/return-of-george-washington.jpg 995w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>Most are taken from the pulps started by <strong>Frank A. Munsey<\/strong>, who converted his fiction magazines to pulp paper and reduced their price, making them more profitable. He published the well-known <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Argosy<\/em> magazine, which got its start in the late 1800s, and several other popular magazines such as <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The All-Story<\/em> and <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Flynn\u2019s Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Series XIII consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Return of George Washington<\/em>, by <strong>George F. Worts<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Lady of Death: The Complete Cases of Mr. Strang<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong>Carroll John Daly<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Corpse Clue: The Complete Cases of Morton &amp; McGarvey<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong>Donald Barr Chidsey<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Thirty Days for Henry: The Complete Tales of Sheriff Henry<\/em>, Vol. 6, by <strong>W.C. Tuttle<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Other Man\u2019s Blood: The Complete Cases of the Scientific Club<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong>Ray Cummings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Immortals<\/em>, by <strong>Ralph Milne Farley<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Sting of the Blue Scorpion: The Adventures of Peter the Brazen<\/em>, Vol. 6, by <strong>Loring Brent<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Ammunition Up: The Complete Adventures of Cordie, Soldier of Fortune<\/em>, Vol. 5, by <strong>W. Wirt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Under Dogs: The Complete Cases of Madame Storey<\/em>, Vol. 3, by <strong>Herbert Footner<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Fifth Gate: The Complete Cases of Tug Norton<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong>Edward Parrish Ware<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>First, we have a stand-alone novel by <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/george-f-worts\/\">George F. Worts<\/a>, who is better known for his adventure series. <em>The Return of George Washington<\/em>, where thanks to the experiments of a scientist, <strong>George Washington<\/strong>, our first president, is returned to life in the 1920s. How does he respond? Could this have been the inspiration for a certain <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/category\/pulp-links\/doc-savage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong> story?<\/p>\n<p>From the creator of the hard-boiled detective, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-articles\/whatever-happened-to-three-gun-terry\/\">Carroll John Daly<\/a> gives us <strong>Mr. Strang<\/strong>. In this series, our hero, who has a bullet lodged in his skull, leads a group of men and women who help him overcome a dangerous criminal threat. <em>Lady of Death: The Complete Cases of Mr. Strang<\/em>, Vol. 1, has the first half \u2014 three stories \u2014 of this series.<\/p>\n<p>Another popular series from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Monthly<\/em> stars hard-boiled Miami cop <strong>Sgt. Wentworth L. McGarvey<\/strong> and his sidekick, <strong>Detective Morton<\/strong>, which ran 30-some stories. As someone living in South Florida, I wonder how accurate it is. <em>The Corpse Clue: The Complete Cases of Morton &amp; McGarvey<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-articles\/a-visit-with-donald-barr-chidsey\/\">Donald Barr Chidsey<\/a> has the first five stories when the series started in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Dime Detective<\/em> magazine. Wonder if it had <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/shudder-pulps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shudder-pulp<\/a> elements in these tales?<\/p>\n<p>The next in <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/w-c-tuttle\/\">W.C. Tuttle<\/a>&#8216;s humorous western series of <strong>Sheriff Henry<\/strong> in <em>Thirty Days for Henry: The Complete Tales of Sheriff Henry<\/em>, Vol. 6.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/immortals.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[15410]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-15462\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/immortals-677x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The Immortals\" width=\"350\" height=\"529\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/immortals-677x1024.jpg 677w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/immortals-198x300.jpg 198w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/immortals-768x1161.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2022\/11\/immortals.jpg 992w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>We got a deluxe hardcopy edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ray-cummings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ray Cummings<\/a>&#8216;s Scientific Club stories some time back, so if you didn&#8217;t want that, we now get the series reprinted in paperback starting with <em>The Other Man\u2019s Blood: The Complete Cases of the Scientific Club<\/em>, Vol. 1, with the first five stories.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ralph-milne-farley\/\">Ralph Milne Farley<\/a> (really <strong>Roger Sherman Hoar<\/strong>) is better known for his Radio series set on Venus, but this time we get a stand-alone novel in <em>The Immortals<\/em>, which was serialized in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Argosy<\/em> in 1934. While it was reprinted in book form, it has been out of print for decades. Here a young inventor runs up against a sinister secret society with an interest in an immortality formula.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing with <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/loring-brent\/\">Loring Brent<\/a> (really George F. Worts)&#8217;s popular <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/peter-the-brazen\/\">Peter the Brazen<\/a><\/strong> is <em>Sting of the Blue Scorpion: The Adventures of Peter the Brazen<\/em>, Vol. 6, which has the rest of his adventures with the sinister <strong>Blue Scorpion<\/strong>. There should be two more volumes in this series. I am looking forward to this one.<\/p>\n<p>Also continuing is next in <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/w-wirt\/\">W. Wirt<\/a>&#8216;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jimmie-cordie\/\">Jimmie Cordie<\/a><\/strong> series in <em>Ammunition Up: The Complete Adventures of Cordie, Soldier of Fortune<\/em>, Vol. 5, with the next three stories. There should be one more for this series.<\/p>\n<p>From Herbert Footner is the next volume of his interesting female detective, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/madame-storey\/\">Madame Storey<\/a><\/strong> with <em>The Under Dogs: The Complete Cases of Madame Storey<\/em>, Vol. 3. This one is double the size of the prior two volumes but only has the next two stories. So one must be a pretty long serial. I enjoyed the first volume, so I am hoping these will be equally good.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Fifth Gate: The Complete Cases of Tug Norton<\/em>, Vol. 1, by Edward Parrish Ware, stars a cowboy turned detective, <strong>Tug Norton<\/strong>, who works for a Kansas City agency. A popular series that ran nearly 50 stories in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Flynn&#8217;s Detective Fiction<\/em>, this volume collects the first six stories.<\/p>\n<p>As always, there are volumes here I am definitely going to get, such as the next Peter the Brazen and Jimmie Cordie volumes; others I am thinking of, such as the Madame Storey and Mr. Strang volumes. And yes, there are some I have no interest in. But hopefully, there are some here that will interest everyone. Check out these volumes.<\/p>\n<p>I had hoped for others to appear, like the next Koyale volume or the final <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/garrett-p-serviss\/\">Garrett Serviss<\/a> collection, or maybe start collecting George F.
