We get some stand-alone works, as well as volumes of various sub-series. This selection seems very heavy on adventure tales mainly from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Argosy<\/em>, but also several mysteries.<\/p>\n<p>Most are taken from the pulps started by <strong><a title=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/frank-a-munsey\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Frank A. Munsey<\/a><\/strong>, who converted his fiction magazines to pulp paper and reduced their price, making them more profitable. He published the well-known <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Argosy<\/em> magazine, which got its start in the late 1800s, and several other popular magazines such as <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The All-Story<\/em> and <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Flynn\u2019s Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Series XIV consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>The Brand of Vindex: The Complete Adventures of Captain Vindex<\/em> by <strong>Tracy French<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Crimes of the Year 2000<\/em> by <strong>Ray Cummings<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Steel Cut Steel<\/em> by <strong>Frederick Faust<\/strong>, writing as <strong>Max Brand<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Assassin: The Complete Adventures of Cordie, Soldier of Fortune<\/em>, Vol. 6, by <strong>W. Wirt<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Sand in the Snow<\/em> by <strong>Norbert Davis<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Plumed Serpent<\/em> by <strong>Richard Barry<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Promise of the Night Wind<\/em> by <strong>Varick Vanardy<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Son of the Red God and Other Tales of the Ta-an<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong>Paul L. Anderson<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Screen of Ice: The Complete Cases of Gillian Hazeltine<\/em>, Vol. 2, by <strong>George F. Worts<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Remember Tomorrow<\/em> by <strong>Theodore Roscoe<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the pages of <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> in the mid-1930s, we get the three adventures of <strong>Captain Vindex<\/strong> by Tracy French. Here, Vindex and his group of five assistants go up against <strong>The Parson<\/strong>, a super-criminal. This one sounds like something along the lines of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/doc-savage\/\">Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong> or <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/shadow\/\">The Shadow<\/a><\/strong>, and it&#8217;s strange that there is nothing else by this author. I look forward to getting this one.<\/p>\n<p>From SF author Ray Cummings, we have another series of science-fiction\/detective stories in <em>Crimes of the Year 2000<\/em>. Here we have two detectives, <strong>Georg Trant<\/strong> and <strong>Jac Lombard<\/strong>, of the Shadow Squad in New York\u2019s Bureau of Criminal Investigations. From there they will use cutting-edge tools to thwart crimes before they occur. This series of three stories from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> has never been reprinted in book form.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/sand-in-the-snow.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[17483]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-17624\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/sand-in-the-snow-679x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Sand in the Snow\" width=\"350\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/sand-in-the-snow-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/sand-in-the-snow-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/sand-in-the-snow-768x1158.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/sand-in-the-snow.jpg 995w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>From Frederick Faust, here writing as Max Brand, we get another tale of suspense in <em>Steel Cut Steel<\/em>. A wanderer gets pulled into a plot organized by a cripple to help him in his quest for vengeance. But will he figure out what is truly going on before things go too far?<\/p>\n<p>With <em>The Assassin: The Complete Adventures of Cordie, Soldier of Fortune<\/em>, Vol. 6, we get the final volume of W. Wirt&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jimmie-cordie\/\">Jimmie Cordie<\/a><\/strong> series of stories. These are tales of a group of American soldiers of fortune from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Argosy<\/em>, though toward the end the series moved to other magazines for their last three adventures. Since I&#8217;ve been getting this series, I look forward to reading this one.<\/p>\n<p><em>Sand in the Snow<\/em> is a suspense series by the prolific Norbert Davis. Here we get the first serial with <strong>Jim Daniels<\/strong>. A lawyer, he is relaxing at an estate only to be pulled into a matter of murder. Not sure how many stories of this character there are. I&#8217;m aware of another serial with this character.<\/p>\n<p>A different adventure is found in Richard Barry&#8217;s <em>The Plumed Serpent<\/em>. Set in the 12th-century Mayan empire, it focuses on the adventures of a Norseman, seen by some as their legendary deity. How will he navigate the political intrigue around him? This sounds like an interesting story from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Argosy<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/remember-tomorrow.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[17483]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-17623\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/remember-tomorrow-678x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Remember Tomorrow\" width=\"350\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/remember-tomorrow-678x1024.jpg 678w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/remember-tomorrow-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/remember-tomorrow-768x1160.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/11\/remember-tomorrow.jpg 993w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>We get the third of the proto-superhero <strong>The Night Wind<\/strong> in <em>Promise of the Night Wind<\/em> by Varick Vanardy. Vanadry is really <strong>Frederick Van Rensselaer Dey<\/strong>, who wrote thousands of <strong>Nick Carter<\/strong> stories. <strong>Bingham Harvard<\/strong>, The Night Wind, has to navigate between crooks and the law, with only his inhumane strength to help him.<\/p>\n<p>Another different series is <em>The Son of the Red God and Other Tales of the Ta-an<\/em>, Vol. 1, which is about a tribe of Cro-Magnons, the People of the Mountain Caves This series by Paul L. Anderson was apparently an influence on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-e-howard\/\">Robert E. Howard<\/a><\/strong> and we get an intro by REH scholar <strong>Rusty Burke<\/strong>. This has the first three stories, but I don&#8217;t know how long the series ran.<\/p>\n<p>George F. Worts is best known as the author of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/peter-the-brazen\/\">Peter the Brazen<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/singapore-sammy\/\">Singapore Sammy<\/a><\/strong>, but he also did a long series with criminal attorney <strong>Gillian Hazeltine<\/strong>. In <em>The Screen of Ice: The Complete Cases of Gillian Hazeltine<\/em>, Vol. 2, we get the next two stories. This character can be seen as a possible prototype for <strong>Perry Mason<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>From the prolific Theodore Roscoe we get a story set in WWI France, <em>Remember Tomorrow<\/em>. Set in a chateau near the Somme, a strange group gathers there during the storm. But there is murder, suspense, and supernatural occurrences. What is going on?<\/p>\n<p>As always we get a mixed bag of volumes. There are several I am getting now, others I may get at some point, and some I don&#8217;t care about. But whatever there is, there should be something of interest.
