Published by the late <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/tom-johnson\/\">Tom<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/tom-johnson\/\">Ginger Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, it is probably the longest-running pulp <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/category\/fanzines\/\">fanzine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/12\/echoes-36.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[17740]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-border alignright size-large wp-image-17769\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/12\/echoes-36-797x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Echoes #36\" width=\"350\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/12\/echoes-36-797x1024.jpg 797w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/12\/echoes-36-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/12\/echoes-36-768x987.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2023\/12\/echoes-36.jpg 1167w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>Because of the changes in format, I&#8217;m not going with a strict 10 issues per posting. So we continue with the third format change, that occurred for issues #17 through #80. As I get closer to wrapping this up, there should be one more posting.<\/p>\n<p>These issues are 8.5- by 11-inches and stapled along the left side and around 50 pages, though for a period they were 46 or 48 pages. They are on white 20-pound paper. We get different artists for the covers, several times playing with the <em>Echoes<\/em> name to tie in with the cover theme.<\/p>\n<p>There are also letter pages, reviews, and a few columns. We get many works by leading pulp researchers like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/al-tonik\/\">Al Tonik<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/link-hullar\/\">Link Hullar<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/don-hutchison\/\">Don Hutchison<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/nick-carr\/\">Nick Carr<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/dickson-thorpe\/\">Dickson Thorpe<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/howard-hopkins\/\">Howard Hopkins<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/will-murray\/\">Will Murray<\/a><\/strong>, and others.<\/p>\n<p>As usual, I will not note every article, but the ones I found most interesting. While we get a lot of articles on popular pulp heroes, we also get articles on western and romance pulps, digests, and movies.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #35 (February 1988)<\/strong>. Continuing columns include Nick Carr&#8217;s &#8220;Spider Notes&#8221; on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/spider\/\">The Spider<\/a><\/strong> and Robert Sampson&#8217;s &#8220;Starting Again,&#8221; now at part 6. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/rick-lai\/\">Rick Lai<\/a><\/strong> looks at the story <em>President <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/fu-manchu\/\">Fu Manchu<\/a><\/em>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/john-dinan\/\">John Dinan<\/a><\/strong> looks further into the topic of the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/defective-detective\/\">Defective Detective<\/a>&#8221; after the then-recent two collections from <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/popular-press\/\">Popular Press<\/a>, which I&#8217;ve reviewed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #36 (April 1988)<\/strong>. We have our third collection of articles on &#8220;Death-Defying Acts.&#8221; Nick Carr examines <strong>The Lone Eagle<\/strong>. And Rick Lai speaks on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/shadow\/\">The Shadow<\/a><\/strong> foe <strong>Zanigew<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #37 (June 1988)<\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ron-wilber\/\">Ron Wilber<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s cover is this time &#8220;Spicy Western Echoes,&#8221; which ties to several non-spicy western articles. Nick Carr and Link Hullar look at western hero <strong>The Black Death<\/strong> and also <strong>Happy Hay<\/strong>. These are part of a series by the two on unusual western heroes. Al Tonik writes about <strong>Long Sam Littlejohn<\/strong> and also <strong>Walt Slade<\/strong>. Dickson Thorpe tells us about the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/pete-rice\/\">Pete Rice<\/a><\/strong> stories that appeared in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Wild West Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #38 (August 1988)<\/strong>. <strong>John Roy<\/strong> provides another article on Canadian pulps, his last as he passed away. <strong>Fred Cook<\/strong> provides a memorial on him. Will Murray continues his investigation into who <strong>Lars Anderson<\/strong>, the creator\/writer of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/domino-lady\/\">The Domino Lady<\/a><\/strong>. Nick Carr starts a series called &#8220;Anatomy of a Pulp Novel&#8221; where he examines in depth an <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/operator-5\/\">Operator #5<\/a><\/strong> novel. Rick Lai looks at the idea of &#8220;shocking revelations&#8221; from the pulp. We get another round-robin set of articles on the theme of &#8220;An Act of Pure Evil.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #39 (October 1988)<\/strong>. We get the first of Don Hutchison&#8217;s new column &#8220;Pulp Fever,&#8221; with its own logo. <strong>David Bates<\/strong> examines <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Scientific Detective<\/em> magazine. Dickson Thorpe looks at <strong>Emperor Maximilian<\/strong>, the foe of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/purple-invasion\/\">Purple Invasion<\/a> saga in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Operator #5<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #40 (December 1988)<\/strong>. We get a cover by Ron Wilber highlighting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/black-bat\/\">The Black Bat<\/a><\/strong>, with the title &#8220;Black Book Echoes.&#8221; This ties to the first of a series of articles on The Black Bat from Tom Johnson, which I believe was turned into <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-bibliography\/pulp-characters\/#black-bat-companion\">The Black Bat Companion<\/a><\/em> from <a title=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/steegerbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steeger Books<\/a>. Will Murray looks into an interesting <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/maxwell-grant\/\">Maxwell Grant<\/a><\/strong> mystery. So we have a good idea of the basis for The Shadow&#8217;s three <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/better-little-books\/\">Better Little Book<\/a> volumes I&#8217;ve posted on. Tom Johnson and Nick Carr look at comic-strip character <strong>Dan Dunn<\/strong> who became a pulp character as well. I did enjoy the humorous article by <strong>Allan J. Isobel<\/strong> titled &#8220;How to Make People Hate You at a Pulp Convention.&#8221; This needs to be reprinted in <em><a title=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/thepulpster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Pulpster<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #41 (February 1989)<\/strong>. A wonderful cover by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/bobb-cotter\/\">Bobb Cotter<\/a><\/strong> for this issue, along with a portfolio of his work. Mostly we get columns, but we do get an article by Tom Johnson on &#8220;Polaris of the Snows,&#8221; and another by <strong>Mario DeMarco<\/strong> on the hero image that he illustrates.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #42 (April 1989)<\/strong>. We get another rare color cover by Ron Wilber featuring Operator #5 during the Purple Invasion saga. This ties to Nick Carr&#8217;s article, the first of several over the next few issues, on &#8220;Who&#8217;s Who in the Purple Invasion.&#8221; Pulp horror author <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/mary-elizabeth-counselman\/\">Mary E. Counselman<\/a><\/strong>, whom I&#8217;ve reviewed here, writes about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/h-p-lovecraft\/\">H.P. Lovecraft<\/a><\/strong>. Will Murray gives us an interview with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/dave-darrigo\/\">Dave Darrigo<\/a><\/strong>, author of the comicbook <em>Wordsmith<\/em>. There is lots of interesting info I didn&#8217;t know at the time I did <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/2023\/07\/14\/pulp-comics-wordsmith\/\">my review of it<\/a>. Pulp artist <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/norman-saunders\/\">Norm Saunders<\/a><\/strong> is the subject of one of Nick Carr&#8217;s articles, the other subject is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jim-hatfield\/\">Jim Hatfield<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>Don Winslow<\/strong> is the topic of Tom Johnson and Nick Carr&#8217;s article. Al Tonik has another of his &#8220;Ramblings of a Perambulating Pulp Fan&#8221; column.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #44 (August 1989)<\/strong>. Ron Wilber&#8217;s cover gives us &#8220;G-8 Echoes,&#8221; tying to Nick Carr&#8217;s article on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/g-8\/\">G-8<\/a><\/strong>. While he also writes about <strong>&#8220;Tailspin&#8221; Tommy<\/strong> with Tom Johnson in another. <strong>John Edwards<\/strong> tells us about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ravenwood\/\">Ravenwood<\/a><\/strong> since reprinted by Steeger Books with new stories from <a title=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/robmdavis.com\/Airship27Hangar\/index.airshipHangar.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Airship 27<\/a>. Researcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/mike-ashley\/\">Mike Ashley<\/a><\/strong> looks at British author <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/algernon-blackwood\/\">Algernon Blackwood<\/a><\/strong> in the U.S. pulps.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #45 (October 1989)<\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/james-reasoner\/\">James Reasoner<\/a><\/strong> takes a look at the &#8220;Son of Jim Hatfield.&#8221; We get some articles on The Spider, not just Nick Carr&#8217;s column, but ones from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/chuck-juzek\/\">Chuck Juzek<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/rich-harvey\/\">Rich Harvey<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #46 (December 1989)<\/strong>. We get an sf cover by Ron Wilber as &#8220;Planet Echoes.&#8221; <strong>David Bates<\/strong> writes on pulp sf author <strong>Neil R. Jones<\/strong>, best known for the <strong>Professor Jameson<\/strong> series. We continue with the round-robin article on &#8220;A Death-Defying Act.&#8221; <strong>Shawn Danowski<\/strong> tells us about <strong>Steelmask<\/strong> from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">G-8 and His Battle Aces<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #47 (February 1990)<\/strong>. Bobb Cotter&#8217;s cover features <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jimmie-cordie\/\">Jimmie Cordie<\/a><\/strong> and ties to the article by Robert Sampson. Steeger Books has since reprinted the whole series. Nick Carr tells us about who&#8217;s who in the pulp westerns. And Will Murray looks into what happened to pulp author <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/laurence-donovan\/\">Laurence Donovan<\/a><\/strong>. He wrote some <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/doc-savage\/\">Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong> novels, as well as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/skipper\/\">The Skipper<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/whisperer\/\">The Whisperer<\/a><\/strong> and later <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/phantom-detective\/\">The Phantom Detective<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #48 (April 1990)<\/strong>. Ron Wilber gives us a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/sheena\/\">Sheena<\/a><\/strong> cover to tie-in with several articles for &#8220;Jungle Echoes.&#8221; <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jerry-page\/\">Jerry Page<\/a><\/strong> gives us two articles on <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jungle-stories\/\">Jungle Stories<\/a><\/em>, and there will be two more in subsequent issues. Nick Carr writes about Sheena. Nick Carr has an Operator #5 article. Tom Johnson looks again at the fighting capabilities of certain pulp heroes. And Dickson Thorpe compares and contrasts two <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/johnston-mcculley\/\">Johnston McCulley<\/a><\/strong> &#8220;bent&#8221; heroes: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/crimson-clown\/\">The Crimson Clown<\/a><\/strong> and <strong>The Man in Purple<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #50 (August 1990)<\/strong>. Under a Ron Wilber cover of The Spider, this time we get a double-length issue at over 100 pages. Allan J. Isobel provides a long article that looks back over 50 issues of <em>Echoes<\/em>. <strong>Andy Biegel Jr.<\/strong> writes on the return of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/peter-the-brazen\/\">Peter the Brazen<\/a><\/strong> to <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/argosy\/\">Argosy<\/a><\/em> in the 1930s. Howard Hopkins looks at youth potions in the pulps. Will Murray takes a look at who created the <em>first<\/em> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/doctor-death\/\">Doctor Death<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>Burt Leake<\/strong> has two more articles on Bill Barnes. Tom Johnson looks at the Black Police saga from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Spider<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This is another great set of issues with many interesting articles. I really think Nick Carr&#8217;s &#8220;Spider Notes&#8221; and &#8220;Anatomy of a Pulp Novel&#8221; could be collected in book form.
