Published by the late <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/tom-johnson\/\">Tom<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/tom-johnson\/\">Ginger Johnson<\/a><\/strong>, it is probably the longest-running pulp <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/category\/fanzines\/\">fanzine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/02\/echoes-51.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[17747]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-border alignright size-large wp-image-17864\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/02\/echoes-51-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Echoes #51\" width=\"350\" height=\"453\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/02\/echoes-51-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/02\/echoes-51-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/02\/echoes-51-768x995.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/02\/echoes-51.jpg 1158w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>Because of the changes in format, I&#8217;m not going with a strict 10 issues per posting. So we conclude the third format change, that occurred for issues #17 through #80. I&#8217;ve already posted on the fourth change.<\/p>\n<p>These issues are 8.5- by 11-inches and stapled along the left side and around 50 pages, though for a period they were 46 or 48 pages. They are on white 20# paper. We got different artists for the covers, several times playing with the <em>Echoes<\/em> name to tie in with the cover theme.<\/p>\n<p>There are also letter pages, reviews, and several columns. In some cases, we have so many columns and multi-part articles that there are often little unique items in an issue.<\/p>\n<p>We get many works by leading pulp researchers like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/al-tonik\/\">Al Tonik<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/link-hullar\/\">Link Hullar<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/don-hutchison\/\">Don Hutchison<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/nick-carr\/\">Nick Carr<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/dickson-thorpe\/\">Dickson Thorpe<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/howard-hopkins\/\">Howard Hopkins<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/will-murray\/\">Will Murray<\/a><\/strong>, and others. As usual, I will not note every article, but the ones I found most interesting. While we get a lot of articles on popular pulp heroes, we also get articles on western and romance pulps, digests, radio, and movies.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #51 (October 1990)<\/strong>. We kick off &#8220;Mammoth Echoes&#8221; with a cover by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/bobb-cotter\/\">Bobb Cotter<\/a><\/strong>. We get articles on <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> and <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/dime-detective\/\">Dime Detective<\/a><\/em>, the last by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/mike-chomko\/\">Michael Chomko<\/a><\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jerry-page\/\">Jerry Page<\/a><\/strong> writes about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/arthur-j-burks\/\">Arthur J. Burks<\/a><\/strong>. Al Tonik looks at both <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/black-bat\/\">The Black Bat<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/sexton-blake\/\">Sexton Blake<\/a><\/strong>. We get part three of <strong>Burt Leake<\/strong>&#8216;s long-running series about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/bill-barnes\/\">Bill Barnes<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>Steve Mitchell<\/strong> has his &#8220;The Weird Corner&#8221; column, Nick Carr is another &#8220;Operator #5 Confidential&#8221; and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/bill-thom\/\">Bill Thom<\/a><\/strong> has the &#8220;Comics Commentary&#8221; column.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #52 (December 1990)<\/strong>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ron-wilber\/\">Ron Wilber<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s cover gives us &#8220;Terror Echoes,&#8221; which ties to the article on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/weird-menace\/\">weird-menace<\/a> stories by <strong>Everett Lange<\/strong>. Jerry Page looks at the authors of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/captain-future\/\">Captain Future<\/a><\/strong>. Nick Carr continues with his &#8220;Spider Notes,&#8221; which will appear in future issues. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/rick-lai\/\">Rick Lai<\/a><\/strong> takes a look at three <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/doc-savage\/\">Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong> items.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #53 (February 1991)<\/strong>. <strong>Shawn Danowski<\/strong>&#8216;s cover on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/moon-man\/\">The Moon Man<\/a><\/strong> is &#8220;Ten Echoes Aces,&#8221; though we don&#8217;t get any Moon Man articles. Tom Johnson writes about the <strong>Black Hood<\/strong> pulp novels. Jerry Page looks at the two novels in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/planet-stories\/\">Planet Stories<\/a><\/em> from Fall 1942. <strong>John Dennis<\/strong> tells us about <strong>Doc Harker<\/strong>, since reprinted by <a title=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/steegerbooks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steeger Books<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #54 (April 1991)<\/strong>. <strong>Mark R. Leonard<\/strong> looks at the short-lived pulp hero <strong>The Cobra<\/strong>. <strong>Ed Cartwright<\/strong> looks at the humorous aviation hero <strong>Phineas Pinkham<\/strong>. Jerry Pages writes on <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Western Short Stories<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #55 (June 1991)<\/strong>. <strong>Kevin Duncan<\/strong>&#8216;s cover is about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/captain-satan\/\">Captain Satan<\/a><\/strong> and ties to <strong>John Edwards<\/strong> article on the pulp hero. Jerry Pages writes about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/henry-kuttner\/\">Henry Kuttner<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s pennames. Don Hutchinson brings back his occasion column &#8220;Pulp Fever.&#8221; Shawn Danowski resumes his column, &#8220;Shadow Radio Show Review,&#8221; with the third one, and further ones will appear in coming issues.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #56 (August 1991)<\/strong>. Ron Wilber&#8217;s cover of <strong>Dejah Thoris<\/strong> ties to Ginger Johnson&#8217;s article. <strong>Bob Jase<\/strong> looks at Better\/Standard&#8217;s comic line. Shawn Danowski starts the first of a comic strip adaptation of the first Black Bat story. We will get a couple of pages at a time, though not in sequential issues. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-sampson\/\">Robert Sampson<\/a><\/strong> looks at a short-lived (seven stories) series, &#8220;The Doings of Dion&#8221; from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #57 (October 1991)<\/strong>. Sadly, I discovered I do <em>not<\/em> have this issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #58 (December 1991)<\/strong>. Kevin Duncan provides a two-page Shadow comic strip. We will get further ones. Rick Lai writes about Doc Savage at the World&#8217;s Fair. Nick Carr writes about another western pulp hero. This is an unusual double issue done in the dos-\u00e0-dos style. One is part A, with a part B, each with its own front and back covers. We get the first of several articles on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/phantom-detective\/\">The Phantom Detective<\/a><\/strong>, this time on the <strong>G. Wayman Jones<\/strong> period by John Edwards. <strong>J.T. Malone<\/strong> looks at a story by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/arthur-leo-zagat\/\">Arthur Leo Zagat<\/a><\/strong> in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/dime-mystery\/\">Dime Mystery<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #61 (June 1992)<\/strong>. We get a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/green-lama\/\">Green Lama<\/a><\/strong> cover by Kevin Duncan, tying to an article by Nick Carr on the mysterious <strong>Magga<\/strong>. Rick Lai has an article on Doc Savage in South America. We also get an article on American pulps in France.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #62 (August 1992)<\/strong>. J.T. Malone looks at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/seabury-quinn\/\">Seabury Quinn<\/a><\/strong> in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/weird-tales\/\">Weird Tales<\/a><\/em>. Dickson Thorpe and John Edwards have an article looking at the use of disguises by various pulp heroes. Nick Carr has two articles: one on G-men <strong>Dan Fowler<\/strong> and <strong>Lynn Vickers<\/strong>, and the other on death in hero pulps.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #63 (October 1992)<\/strong>. John Edwards moves on the <strong>Robert Wallace<\/strong> years of <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Phantom Detective<\/em>. Dickson Thorpe takes a closer look at one of the villains from Operator #5&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/purple-war\/\">Purple War<\/a> saga.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #64 (December 1992)<\/strong>. We get a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/conan\/\">Conan<\/a><\/strong> cover by Ron Wilber, which ties to several <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-e-howard\/\">Robert E. Howard<\/a><\/strong>-related pieces. We get a remembrance of Howard and a look at his home in Cross Plains, Texas. Nick Carr takes a look at <strong>Dr. Chu Lung<\/strong> from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/g-8\/\">G-8<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #65 (February 1993)<\/strong>. Nick Carr looks at air-war pulps. John Edwards looks at both <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Lone Wolf Detective<\/em> magazine and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/norman-daniels\/\">Norman Daniels<\/a><\/strong> period of <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Phantom Detective<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #66 (April 1993)<\/strong>. Ted Baglin looks at an unusual comic strip, one that ran in a give-away magazine put out by Gulf gas stations: <strong>Wings Winfair<\/strong>. This started in 1937 and ran for at least two years, maybe more.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #67 (June 1993)<\/strong>. <strong>John Wellutini<\/strong> provides a unique take on the Doc Savage series. We get a look at the short-lived pulp <em>The World&#8217;s Greatest Stories<\/em>. J.T. Malone tells us about an overlooked work by <strong>William Chester<\/strong>, author of the <strong>Kioga<\/strong> series. An interesting article on the pulps is reprinted from <em>The New York Times<\/em> from 1936.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #68 (August 1993)<\/strong>. Author and editor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/james-van-hise\/\">James Van Hise<\/a><\/strong> starting a multi-part series on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/shadow\/\">The Shadow<\/a><\/strong>. <strong>Henry Kuttner<\/strong> wrote two Phantom Detectives, and <strong>Virgil Utter<\/strong> takes a look at them. Under a cover by <strong>Rick Clabaugh<\/strong> on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/avenger\/\">The Avenger<\/a><\/strong>, we get Rick Lai&#8217;s chronology for him.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #71 (February 1994)<\/strong>. We get an Operator #5 cover by Kevin Duncan, tied to another of Nick Carr&#8217;s &#8220;Operator #5 Confidential&#8221; articles. Dickson Thorpe takes a look at <strong>Harrison Sheridan<\/strong>, a secondary character from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Operator #5<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #72 (April 1994)<\/strong>. John Dinan looks at the boy&#8217;s book series, the <em>Boy Allies<\/em>. Shawn Danowski writes about the <em>I Love a Mystery<\/em> radio show. <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Planet Stories<\/em> is the subject of <strong>Ray Capella<\/strong>&#8216;s article.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #73 (June 1994)<\/strong>. John Dinan looks at some romance pulps. Scars are the subject of Dickson Thorpe&#8217;s piece. John Edward&#8217;s look at <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Phantom Detective<\/em> now moves into the period of 1937-39, where authorship is unclear.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #74 (August 1994)<\/strong>. We get a long overdue return of Burt Leake&#8217;s series on <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Bill Barnes<\/em>, now up to #19. And John Edward&#8217;s look at <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Phantom Detective<\/em> has passed the 100th novel.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #75 (September 1994)<\/strong>. For this issue, we get a double-length one, and earlier than usual. Shawn Danowski writes about <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Underworld<\/em> magazine. Marvin Lachman writes about <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Dime Detective<\/em>. <strong>Martin Hawk<\/strong> gives us a bibliography of husband and wife authors <strong>James<\/strong> and <strong>Livia Reasoner<\/strong>. James Van Hise tells us about the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/edgar-rice-burroughs\/\">Edgar Rice Burroughs<\/a><\/strong> fanzine the <em>Barsoomian<\/em>. Nick Carr and Tom Johnson write about the homes of the pulp heroes. And Dickson Thorpe writes on the first introductions of pulp heroes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #76 (October 1994)<\/strong>. Nick Carr and Tom Johnson write on sword use by pulp heroes. <strong>Jeffrey T. Zwerloff<\/strong> looks at the 1988-89 DC Comics take on The Avenger. Nick Carr gives us a western pulp quiz.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Echoes<\/em> #77 (December 1994)<\/strong>. Nick Carr writes about frontier doctors in the western pulps. Steve Mitchell tells us about Burrough&#8217;s Venus series.
