We get some stand-alone works, as well as volumes of various sub-series. This selection seems very heavy on crime and detective stories and series.<\/p>\n<p>Most are taken from the pulps started by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/frank-a-munsey\/\">Frank A. Munsey<\/a><\/strong>, who converted his fiction magazines to pulp paper and reduced their price, making them more profitable. He published the well-known <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/argosy\/\">Argosy<\/a><\/em> magazine, which got its start in the late 1800s, and several other popular magazines such as <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/all-story\/\">The All-Story<\/a><\/em> and <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/flynns-detective-fiction-weekly\/\">Flynn\u2019s Detective Fiction Weekly<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Series XVI consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Satan&#8217;s Mark: The Complete Cases of Satan Hall<\/em>, Vol. 2, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/carroll-john-daly\/\">Carroll John Daly<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Into and Out of the Primitive<\/em>, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-ames-bennet\/\">Robert Ames Bennet<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Web of Destiny: The Complete Cabalistic Cases of Semi Dual<\/em>, Vol. 4, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/j-u-giesy\/\">J.U. Adams<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Dark Peril<\/em> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/max-brand\/\">Max Brand<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Snow Girl<\/em> by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ray-cummings\/\">Ray Cummings<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We get the next collection of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/satan-hall\/\">Satan Hall<\/a><\/strong> stories from Carroll John Daly, the creator of the hard-boiled detective. Satan Hall is Daly&#8217;s ruthless police detective with a distinctive look. Here we get the next five stories and I&#8217;m very behind on getting my posting out on him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/midnight-taxi.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[19125]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19306\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/midnight-taxi.jpg\" alt=\"Midnight Taxi\" width=\"300\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/midnight-taxi.jpg 997w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/midnight-taxi-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/midnight-taxi-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/midnight-taxi-768x1155.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I previously posted on a pair of lost-world stories by Robert Ames Bennet. While he mainly wrote Westerns, he wrote a few that weren&#8217;t. This time we get a pair of stories that appeared in Munsey&#8217;s <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Scrap Book<\/em>: <em>Into the Primitive<\/em> (1907-08) and <em>Out of the Primitive<\/em> (1911). <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Scrap Book<\/em> ran from 1906-12, spinning out <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Cavalier<\/em> and then merging with it. The two stories tell of a small group surviving in the wilds of Africa.<\/p>\n<p>We get the fourth collection of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/semi-dual\/\">Semi Dual<\/a><\/strong> stories in <em>The Web of Destiny<\/em>, an unusual occult detective by J.U. Giesy and Junius B. Smith. Here we get the next two stories in the series. I look forward to this one.<\/p>\n<p>A new series in <em>Midnight Taxi<\/em>, the first collecting the stories of Federal Operative <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/smooth-kyle\/\">Peter \u201cSmooth\u201d Kyle<\/a><\/strong> by Borden Chase (a pseudonym of <strong>Frank G. Fowler<\/strong>). A former taxi cab driver, he uses his past career to work undercover in New York. This has the first story, serialized from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Argosy<\/em>, but I have no idea how many stories are in the series.<\/p>\n<p>The next in the series of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jimmy-wentworth\/\">Jimmy Wentworth<\/a><\/strong> stories is <em>The Jade Serpent<\/em> by Sidney Herschel Small. Here we get the next six stories in this series starring a detective born in China who works in San Francisco&#8217;s Chinatown. This series is from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> and ran nearly 30 stories, often cover featured.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/peter-the-brazen\/\">Peter the Brazen<\/a><\/strong> is probably George F. Worts&#8217;s most well-known character. Written under his Loring Brent pseudonym, this radio operator turned adventurer in his later stories where he went up against a sinister foe named <strong>The Blue Scorpion<\/strong> and others.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/stunt-man.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[19125]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19309\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/stunt-man.jpg\" alt=\"Stunt Man\" width=\"300\" height=\"452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/stunt-man.jpg 995w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/stunt-man-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/stunt-man-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2024\/11\/stunt-man-768x1158.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Another series continues with <em>The Swamp Angel<\/em>, which has the next group of stories of U.S. Forest Ranger <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/john-calhoun\/\">John Calhoun<\/a><\/strong> by Edward Parrish Ware. We get the next four stories of this detective series set in the swamplands of Arkansas, as well as an intro by the late <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/robert-sampson\/\">Robert Sampson<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A stand-alone novel, <em>Stunt Man<\/em> by Eustace L. Adams is a story of intrigue set in the world of Hollywood movies. It appeared in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">The Argosy<\/em> in 1937. The author was best known for his many aviation stories aimed at boys, but he wrote other works as well.<\/p>\n<p>From Max Brand, the pseudonym of <strong>Frederick Faust<\/strong> mainly used for his Western writing, we get <em>The Dark Peril<\/em>. It&#8217;s an action-filled crime novel. Here our hero has a dark secret as he is on a quest for riches, while others hunt for him.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, from Ray Cummings is <em>The Snow Girl<\/em>. In a science-fiction tale set in Antarctica, a group must deal with a renegade group led by a young woman. She has a deadly weapon created by her father, which she threatens Little America in her quest for gold.<\/p>\n<p>As always, a great set of volumes with new series, continuations of others, and stand-alone works. There are several I plan on getting, others I might. And some I&#8217;m not that interested in.
