We get some stand-alone works, as well as volumes of various sub-series. This selection seems very heavy on crime and detective stories and series.<\/p>\n<p>Most are taken from the pulps started by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/frank-a-munsey-co\/\">Frank A. Munsey<\/a><\/strong>, who converted his fiction magazines to pulp paper and reduced their price, making them more profitable. He published the well-known <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/argosy\/\">Argosy<\/a><\/em> magazine, which got its start in the late 1800s, and several other popular magazines such as <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/all-story\/\">The All-Story<\/a><\/em> and <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/detective-fiction-weekly\/\">Flynn\u2019s Detective Fiction Weekly<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Series XVII consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Golden River: The Complete Adventures of Ben Quorn<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/talbot-mundy\/\">Talbot Mundy<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Lady of the Night Wind<\/em>, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/varick-vanardy\/\">Varick Vanardy<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>King of the Exiles<\/em>, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/thomson-burtis\/\">Thomson Burtis<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>For a Point of Honor: The Complete Cases of Riordan<\/em>, Vol. 2, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/victor-maxwell\/\">Victor Maxwell<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>The Dark Waters<\/em>, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/william-corcoran\/\">William Corcoran<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><em>Murder Without Motive: The Complete Cases of Show-Me McGee<\/em>, Vol. 1, by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/frederick-c-davis\/\">Frederick C. Worts<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From the master of adventure, Talbot Mundy, we get the first of two volumes reprinting his short <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ben-quorn\/\">Ben Quorn<\/a><\/strong> series. This one has never been reprinted before. I know this volume has all six short stories from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/adventure\/\">Adventure<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/king-of-exiles.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[19163]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19521 image-border\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/king-of-exiles.jpg\" alt=\"King of the Exiles\" width=\"350\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/king-of-exiles.jpg 996w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/king-of-exiles-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/king-of-exiles-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/king-of-exiles-768x1157.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>The fourth and final story in the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/night-wind\/\">Night Wind<\/a><\/strong> series, <em>Lady of the Night Wind<\/em> is here. Written by Varick Vanardy, this story focuses on <strong>Lady Katherine Harvard<\/strong>, the love of the Night Wind, in a story of mystery and intrigue set in London.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>King of the Exiles<\/em> by Thomson Burtis (1896-1971), our hero must pose as a flying bandit to infiltrate a gang of aerial criminals operating on the Mexican border. Burtis mainly wrote aviation pulp stories but did do others as well. This one was cover-featured in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/short-stories\/\">Short Stories<\/a><\/em> in 1929, the cover used for this book.<\/p>\n<p>We get the second volume of stories with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/sgt-riordan\/\">Sgt. Riordan<\/a><\/strong> in <em>For a Point of Honor<\/em> by Victor Maxwell (actually <strong>Maxwell Vietor<\/strong>, 1880-1950). This hard-hitting detective series ran some 80 stories in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> from 1925 to 1939.<\/p>\n<p>We get a story of dark intrigue in <em>The Dark Waters<\/em> by William Corcoran (1901-69), where bodyguard <strong>Dex Ward<\/strong> is escorting an enigmatic young lady, an exile from a small country, on a mission to buy weapons for her countrymen. But other forces are arrayed against the mission, including the deadly <strong>Eel<\/strong>. This story was noted on the cover of <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Argosy<\/em> in 1936 when it appeared.<\/p>\n<p>Frederick C. Davis is probably best known for creating <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/operator-5\/\">Operator #5<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/moon-man\/\">The Moon Man<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ravenwood\/\">Ravenwood<\/a><\/strong>, and others. Here is the first of two volumes with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/show-me-mcgee\/\">Detective Lt. John \u201cShow-Me\u201d McGee<\/a><\/strong>, <em>Murder Without Motive<\/em>. McGee unravels baffling cases in an unknown coastal town in a series that ran in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> in 1933 and 1934.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/green-mamba.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[19163]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-19520\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/green-mamba.jpg\" alt=\"Green Mamba\" width=\"350\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/green-mamba.jpg 998w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/green-mamba-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/green-mamba-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2025\/12\/green-mamba-768x1154.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>From Fred MacIsaac is another murder mystery in <em>Murder in the Nudist Club<\/em>. A private detective is hired by a millionaire to solve the murder of his wife. Can he do so without becoming the next victim? This one was cover-featured in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> in 1934.<\/p>\n<p>A short series from Richard Wormser stars <strong>Dave McNally<\/strong>, who hunts exotic animals for the entertainment series, <em>Gorilla Cargo<\/em>, contains the first five stories. This one ran in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Argosy<\/em> from 1936 to 1941.<\/p>\n<p>We get the second collection of stories with reporter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/daffy-dill\/\">Joe \u201cDaffy\u201d Dill<\/a><\/strong> of the <em>New York Chronicle<\/em>. <em>Green Mamba<\/em> has the next six stories of this series from Richard B. Sale. This classic series of mystery and suspense with our wise-cracking reporter comes from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em>, where it ran for over 60 stories from 1934-43.<\/p>\n<p>George F. Worts is probably better known as the creator of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/peter-the-brazen\/\">Peter the Brazen<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/singapore-sammy\/\">Singapore Sammy<\/a><\/strong>, but another long series he has is of lawyer <strong>Gillian Hazeltine<\/strong>, who is considered a forerunner to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/perry-mason\/\">Perry Mason<\/a><\/strong>. We get the third collection of stories in <em>The Silencer Mystery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s another good set of stories. Some I will be getting, others I might get at some point. I was hoping we&#8217;d get the second and last volumes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/mr-strang\/\">Mr. Strang<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/barry-chase\/\">Barry Chase<\/a><\/strong>, as well as the next volumes of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jigger-masters\/\">Jigger Masters<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/madame-storey\/\">Madame Storey<\/a><\/strong>.
