Gray is sort of inspired by the classic pulp hero The Avenger and has a group of associates organized as Assistance Unlimited.

Gray is located in a fictional town called Sovereign City (created by Pro Se Press publisher Tommy Hancock), and has been part of the larger Sovereign City Project. He is also set in the same universe as Barry’s other characters, so he has crossed over with them. However, this and other recent works from Barry Reese were put out by himself under the Reese Unlimited imprint instead of through Pro Se Press. I have no idea why.

In addition to the current members of Assistance Unlimited (Morgan Watts, now the new leader of AU; Eun Jiwon, Samantha Grace, Abigail Cross, The Observer, formerly The Eidolon; the Blue Flame; and the golden age Daredevil, not the Marvel comics character).

In Brimstone, set toward the end of 1944, we start with the Philadelphia Experiment, which occurred the year prior. Here, the USS Eldridge didn’t go invisible, but found itself millions of years in the past. After various attempts, they find themselves in a strange version of our world called “Dusk.” There is a bizarre version of Philadelphia where they find a group of children who call themselves “the Lost.” With their help, the ship is able to return to our world, bringing them along. And there is the problem.

In a bizarre act, the Lost kill, in a horrible fashion, the father of an associate of Assistance Unlimited, Major Caruso of Project: Cicada. They hope this will dissuade Lazarus from stopping them. Meanwhile, the Lost work to free a sorcerer named Brimstone, enlisting the aid of a criminal named Cutthroat. With him, they hope to merge Dusk with our world, but not in a good way. Will Lazarus and Assistance Unlimited be able to stop them? Will we see more of Brimstone and Cutthroat? And will there be any repercussions in the future regarding this other work of Dusk?

In “Sojourn,” there is a gangland war starting in Sovereign City. AU wouldn’t bother to get involved, except that an English witch has gotten herself involved on one side, using this to get hold of a dangerous book. So while AU doesn’t care about the war, they do need to stop her. Can they?

The timeline at the end of the volume has been updated, with several new and upcoming works. However, it really needs to be better formatted for reading. For instance, years and book titles should be bolded and the like. There are several new Reese books out recently: volumes 3 and 4 of The Straw-man series, Dark Society vol. 1 & 2 (with many more planned), Grimalkin and Omnium Gatherum. Reviews of these will be coming soon. Also coming soon will be the next Lazarus Gray volume.

Recently we got a new Lazarus Gray book: The Adventures of Lazarus Gray, Vol. 15, from Barry Reese now joined by a co-author, Dale Russell.
