We get some stand-alone works, as well as volumes of various subseries. This selection seems very heavy on crime and detective stories and series.<\/p>\n<p>Most are taken from the pulps started by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/frank-a-munsey\/\">Frank A. Munsey<\/a><\/strong>, who converted his fiction magazines to pulp paper and reduced their price, making them more profitable. He published the well-known <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/argosy\/\">Argosy<\/a><\/em> magazine, which got its start in the late 1800s, and several other popular magazines such as <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/all-story\/\">The All-Story<\/a><\/em> and <em class=\"pulp-magazine\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/detective-fiction-weekly\/\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Series XVIII consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Dr. Skull<\/em>, by Lewis Clay<\/li>\n<li><em>Abbey of the Damned: The Complete Cases of Mike and Trixie<\/em>, Vol. 3, by T.T. Flynn<\/li>\n<li><em>The Death Messenger: The Complete Cases of Jigger Masters<\/em>, Vol. 4, by Anthony M. Rud<\/li>\n<li><em>Box 991: The Complete Cabalistic Cases of Semi Dual<\/em>, Vol. 5, by J.U. Giesy &amp; Junius B. Smith<\/li>\n<li><em>Blind Trails at Tonto: The Complete Tales of Sheriff Henry<\/em>, Vol. 8, by W.C. Tuttle<\/li>\n<li><em>In the Murderer\u2019s Brain: The Complete Cases of the Scientific Club<\/em>, Vol. 3, by Ray Cummings<\/li>\n<li><em>The Legion of the Living Dead: The Complete Cases of Mr. Strang<\/em>, Vol. 2, by Carroll John Daly<\/li>\n<li><em>The Mental Marvel<\/em>, by Fred MacIsaac<\/li>\n<li><em>The Adventure of the Voodoo Moon: The Complete Cases of the Lady From Hell<\/em>, Vol. 2, by Eugene Thomas<\/li>\n<li><em>Murder on the Film: The Complete Cases of Candid Jones<\/em>, Vol. 1, by Richard B. Sale<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Dr. Skull<\/em> appears to be the only work by <strong>Lewis Clay<\/strong>, which first appeared in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em> in 1938 for 10 parts. The city of New York is being menaced by someone who can apparently use occult abilities to speak through others and see through their eyes: <strong>Dr. Skull<\/strong>. This sounds very interesting, and I am planning on getting this one.<\/p>\n<p>From <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/t-t-flynn\/\">T.T. Flynn<\/a><\/strong> is the next collection of the detective stories starring <strong>Mike Harris<\/strong> and <strong>Trixie Meehan<\/strong>: <em>Abbey of the Damned<\/em>, which is Vol. 3 of the series from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em>. We get the next three stories, so we will need two or three more volumes for this one. This is a series for those who enjoy hard-boiled crime with a male-and-female pair of bickering detectives.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/in-the-murderers-brain.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[22068]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-22435\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/in-the-murderers-brain-681x1024.jpg\" alt=\"In the Murderer's Brain\" width=\"350\" height=\"526\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/in-the-murderers-brain-681x1024.jpg 681w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/in-the-murderers-brain-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/in-the-murderers-brain-768x1155.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/in-the-murderers-brain.jpg 997w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>We get the next <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/jigger-masters\/\">Jigger Masters<\/a><\/strong> collection, <em>The Death Messenger<\/em>, which is the fourth collection from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/anthony-m-rud\/\">Anthony M. Rud<\/a><\/strong>. I have been enjoying this series that mixes science with detective fiction, and we get the next two stories in the series: \u201cThe Death Messenger\u201d and \u201cA Giant in the Swimming Pool.\u201d This is another I will be getting.<\/p>\n<p>And I am happy we are getting another <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/semi-dual\/\">Semi Dual<\/a><\/strong> collection in <em>Box 991<\/em>. This gives us the next two stories by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/j-u-giesy\/\">J.U. Giesy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/junius-b-smith\/\">Junius B. Smith<\/a><\/strong>. Semi Dual is an unusual <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/occult-detectives\/\">occult detective<\/a>, more cerebral, and allows his associates to deal with the physicality of the stories. As the prior stories had Semi Dual and <strong>Gordon Glace<\/strong> traveling across the country, I am expecting we will be back in New York for these two. But we will see.<\/p>\n<p>The next collection of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/sheriff-henry\/\">Sheriff Henry<\/a><\/strong> stories, <em>Blind Trails at Tonto<\/em>, continues the adventures of this humorous Western series by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/w-c-tuttle\/\">W.C. Tuttle<\/a><\/strong>. We get the next three stories in this long-running series.<\/p>\n<p><em>In the Murderer\u2019s Brain<\/em> has the next set of stories in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/ray-cummings\/\">Ray Cummings<\/a><\/strong>\u2019 \u201cScientific Club\u201d series. Here we get a series of crimes being solved by the experiments of <strong>Doctor Adams<\/strong>, <strong>Dr. Gregg<\/strong>, <strong>Detective Marberry<\/strong>, and their associates.<\/p>\n<p>We get the second and last volume of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/mr-stang\/\">Mr. Strang<\/a><\/strong> series from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/carroll-john-daly\/\">Carroll John Daly<\/a><\/strong>, the creator of the hard-boiled detective. <em>The Legion of the Living Dead<\/em> has the third and final story in this series from <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em>. Mr. Strang is a strange character with a Mr. Spock-like haircut. I look forward to reviewing this whole series.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/murder-in-the-film.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[22068]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-22433\" src=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/murder-in-the-film-679x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Murder in the Film\" width=\"350\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/murder-in-the-film-679x1024.jpg 679w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/murder-in-the-film-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/murder-in-the-film-768x1158.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/files\/2026\/04\/murder-in-the-film.jpg 995w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a>From the prolific <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/fred-macisaac\/\">Fred MacIsaac<\/a><\/strong>, we get <em>The Mental Marvel<\/em>. Our hero, <strong>Roger Thule<\/strong>, is a mental prodigy, though a physical weakling. But when his father is shot dead and the only clue is a lady\u2019s scented handkerchief, he decides to find the killer. And in doing so, transforms himself into a fighter, not just to find the killer, but to win the his love of his life.<\/p>\n<p>We get the second volume of stories with the <strong>Lady From Hell<\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/vivian-legrand\/\">Vivian Legrand<\/a><\/strong>, from <strong>Eugene Thomas<\/strong>. <em>The Adventure of the Voodoo Moon<\/em> has the next eight stories, and we will need one more volume for this series. We get another series of stories with this femme fatale who works with her right-hand man, <strong>Adrian Wylie<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>I have heard of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/candid-camera-kid\/\">Candid Camera Kid<\/a><\/strong>, but not <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/candid-jones\/\">Candid Jones<\/a><\/strong>, another camera-toting detective. This series is by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/richard-b-sale\/\">Richard B. Sale<\/a><\/strong>, and even crossed over with another series he did, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/tag\/daffy-dill\/\">Daffy Dill<\/a><\/strong>. <em>Murder on the Film<\/em> is the first volume, with five stories in this series that ran almost 20 stories in <em class=\"pulp-magazine\">Detective Fiction Weekly<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As always, it&#8217;s a mixed bag of volumes. There are ones here I plan on getting, others I might, and some I have no interest in.
