Joe toys, in particular, and inspired by the Adventure Team era of the action figures in the 1970s, and thus set in that time period. But they have been brought back under a new name, fully owned by Beard.

If you read the first four volumes (and, hopefully, the short-story collection), you should have been introduced to them: D.C. Jones, Marcus, Sarge, Kent, Greg, Glenn, and Dixie. Each has a unique skill, such as pilot, sailor, astronaut, techie, etc., similar to all the G.I. Joe figures during that time.

In addition, they have been joined by Mike, called “Mecha-Mike” in the comic strip ad in the past volume, and Dr. John Bird, who becomes The Bullet. They fill the place of Mike Powers, Atomic Man, and Bulletman from the toy line. Also added in is Veronica, who is now D.C. Jones’ wife and the source of funding for ACI, who first appeared toward the end of the last novel.

We start off things with some of the team in India, which turns into a rescue when a fire breaks out in a slum, which leads to one member, Greg, being seriously injured. At the same time, D.C. and Veronica are in Scotland on their honeymoon when he tries to help rescue some people in a cave. In both places, a new group intervenes with disastrous results. Diego, who was previously an ACI trainee, is seen with this new group. Who are they, and what do they want?

Things get worse when the U.N. seems to be turning against ACI. This new group, Super Adventure Command, or SAC, seems to be at the heart of it. The team is made up of seven men and a robot. This Super Adventure Command seems an allusion to the Super Joe Adventure Team that replaced the G.I. Joe Adventure Team in 1977.

Is the robot Oberon an analog to Luminos? But we didn’t see analogs for the enemies, Gor, leader of the Terrons, or Darkon.

Soon, SAC is interfering with the work of ACI, sometimes physically, and ACI finds itself not welcome. We start to get an idea about this new team after one of the SAC members disappears, only to mysteriously reappear. As the team works to help Greg recover from his serious injury at their mountain headquarters, matters seem to come to a head with the Chilean military and SAC itself. What will be the outcome of this?

At the end, we are promised that the team will return in “A Day in the Life of.” I look forward to it. It will be interesting to see how the fallout of this event will carry over to the next novel. Will the people behind SAC continue to be an issue?

The fifth volume of D.C.
