I have previously posted on the excellent Illustration<\/a><\/em> magazine, published by Illustrated Press<\/a>. It was published quarterly for several years and then ended with issue No. 84 in 2023. It featured articles on a variety of illustration artists who did advertising art, book and magazine covers, and interior artwork, including some pulp magazine artists.<\/p>\n

\"Illustration<\/a><\/p>\n

Daniel Zimmer<\/a><\/strong> is the person behind it and was a main contributor, though others such as David Saunders<\/a><\/strong> also contributed articles. Some of these pieces were later expanded into large-format hardcover books.<\/p>\n

But Zimmer brought it back with No. 85, now on a subscription basis, with back issues available on its website while supplies last. I do not think it is being carried by any reseller. He is offering subscriptions for four, eight, or 12 issues.<\/p>\n

Now I will look at the next four issues, Nos. 93\u201396. Subscriptions are available for the upcoming issues. As always, since this blog is pulp-focused, I will concentrate mainly on the pulp illustrators featured in these issues.<\/p>\n

No. 93 (March 2026):<\/strong> No pulp artists this time, but we get a trio of artists from Zimmer. First up is John Rush<\/strong>, whose work is in the style of the Golden Age of illustration. He has done covers for the slicks, but not the pulps, though his artwork is very nice. For me, the next one was the one I liked the most. I collected Gold Key Comics<\/a> as a kid, and the distinctive painted covers they used for their TV and adventure titles, some of them borderline superheroes, stood out to me. These were done by George Wilson<\/strong>, who did covers for their Phantom<\/em>, Star Trek<\/em>, Turok<\/em>, Lost in Space<\/em>, Magnus<\/em>, and many other titles. Hermes Press has recently done a book focused on him. And finally, we get the work of James E. Allen<\/strong>, who also did magazine illustrations in the early 20th century, though for the slicks.<\/p>\n

No. 94 (April 2026):<\/strong> No pulp artists this time either. We get three artists from Zimmer. Martha Sawyers<\/strong> did several slick magazine covers (Liberty<\/em>, Collier’s<\/em>, etc.) and other illustration art. Douglass Crockwell<\/strong> is known as “the other Rockwell” and did many Saturday Evening Post<\/em> covers very similar to those of Norman Rockwell<\/strong>. Finally, Arthur Ignatius Keller<\/strong>, a Golden Age illustrator. As a fan of Rockwell, I was not aware of him, but I did enjoy his work.<\/p>\n

\"Illustration<\/a><\/p>\n

No. 95 (May 2026):<\/strong> While there are no pulp artists, the three artists we do get this time, again profiled by Zimmer, all did paperback book covers in the ’50s through the ’70s, and I recall many of them. First up is Bob Pepper<\/strong> (1938\u20132019). While I don’t recall seeing his album covers, I do recall his covers for books like the Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, as well as some of his other paperback work and his game artwork. Michael Hinge<\/strong> is from New Zealand, and I do recall seeing some of his artwork for SF magazines and paperbacks. And finally, Richard Powers<\/strong>, who also did some distinctive science-fiction paperback book covers. I might not have always liked them, but I had to admit they stood out.<\/p>\n

No. 96 (June 2026):<\/strong> Again, there were no pulp artists among the three featured here, all profiled by Zimmer. First up is Paul Lehr<\/strong>, who did SF digest and paperback book covers from the 1950s into the 1980s. I recall seeing many of these covers in bookstores. Next is Arthur Szyk<\/strong>, who did many magazine covers, including for Collier’s<\/em>. Finally, there is Boris Artzybasheff<\/strong>, who did many book and magazine covers over the years. I think I’ve seen some of his Time<\/em> magazine covers.<\/p>\n

While none of these issues had any pulp artists, I look forward to getting some in future issues. So, in that hope, I will be subscribing for future issues.
