Rider Haggard (and others). Strangely, in most of these stories, his involvement is secondary, and often he is in disguise such that other characters don’t know he is Holmes.

I had seen the individual volumes, but was put off by the variety of editions and titles. In fact, it looks like MX Publishers has recently put out the three stories in separate volumes, again with slightly different titles.

The volume contains:

Sherlock Holmes on the Roof of the World (aka The Great Detective on the Roof of the World)

Allan Quatermain at the Crucible of Life (aka The Great Detective at the Crucible of Life and Allan Quatermain Meets the Great Detective in Ethiopia, 1872)

Allan Quatermain at the Dawn of Time.

The first story is set in Tibet in 1891. Here, Horace Holly and Leo Vincey are searching for She after the events of that book. In the library at Lhasa, they encounter the Norwegian Sigerson, who is really Holmes during the time he was thought dead. But when they get accused of murder, Holmes has to prove their innocence without giving away who he is. This leads to the revelation of a lost gospel. Do they discover something about the Son of God?

This one is the shortest story here, and has some accompanying materials that explain how the “author” found the manuscript.

The next story is actually recorded by Dr. John Watson before he met Holmes. He had met and befriended Allan Quatermain, who invited Watson to join him on a journey to the U.S. There they meet retired artist Thomas Church. It is there that Quatermain relates an experience in 1872, where a young Holmes, traveling as Will Scott, along with what may be another character from the canon, accompanied him on a trip to Ethiopia. Of course, neither Quatermain nor Watson knew it was Holmes.

After returning from another trip, Quatermain is met by four men, all with different goals, who want Quatermain to lead them on an expedition. One is looking for evidence that the recently deposed king of Ethiopia is still alive. Another is looking for the lost Library of Alexandria, and, in particular, a lost gospel. And Will Scott and his instructor are looking for more evidence of the “missing link.” All of them expect to find this in part of the Rift Valley. Quatermain is also joined by his associate Hans the Hottentot, along with a Zulu warrior sent by a shaman. The group then sails up the coast of Africa to land at the northern end of Ethiopia. There, they are joined by some more people, including Richard Burton and a woman astronomer looking for a mysterious meteor. What will they discover?

This story has both footnotes and endnotes, as well as various additional documents, including the author’s essay on “H. Rider Haggard’s Character, Hans the Hottentot.” I wonder if he’s related to Jim the Hottentot, who works with The Major?

The third story is set in 1873, when Quatermain is coming home after the events of “The Treasure of the Lake.” While doing so, he hears rumors of a group of “white witch doctors” operating on the coast, in the area of Sierra Leone. Thus, he decides to investigate and finds a huge complex being built by a group of scientists and engineers, and meets up with one of the people he met in Ethiopia, a female astronomer. He finds out this is one of two such complexes being built, the other on the west coast of South America. Their purpose is tied to “listening” to the Star of Bethlehem, a nova that was visible during the birth of Christ. Are they successful, and what is the message?

This last part is kind of strange, as before we get to the core of the story, we go through letters and a diary between the female astronomer and Sherlock Holmes’s cousin, with Holmes’s notes added in. Further, we meet characters from stories by Jules Verne as well.

Thomas Kent Miller has also published parts of these stories in the Quatermain: The New Adventures series from Airship 27. No. 2 includes an altered version of the second, and Vol. 5 includes the core part of the third. He also contributed to the second Professor Challenger series from Airship 27, which relates to the third story in this series, focused on the site in South America.

These are somewhat complex stories and may not be to everyone’s liking, but they show a great deal of imagination in creating them. If you’ve read the shorter, altered versions, check out the complete stories here.

I recently got a massive volume of Sherlock Holmes stories: Sherlock Holmes in the Fullness of Time; or Adventures on Three Roads Less Traveled by Thomas Kent Miller.
