I previously reviewed him as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackcoatpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Black Coat Press<\/a> has run new stories of him in their <em>Tales of the Shadowmen<\/em> series and put out a collection of original S\u00e2r stories with him going up against <strong>Jack the Ripper<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Now Black Coat Press has put out a collection of new and old stories, <em>S\u00e2r Dubnotal 2: The Astral Trail<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The first collection had reprinted the first original S\u00e2r story, then reprinted the storyline with him going up against Jack the Ripper that ran in novellas #7-11. But they didn&#8217;t have the eightth story, so they had to skip it. It has now been found and is included here.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the volume is made up of 11 new stories, most of which have run in volumes of <em>Tales of the Shadowmen<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->\u2022\u00a0<strong>Matthew Dennion<\/strong>: &#8220;Clash of the Titans&#8221; has S\u00e2r teaming up with <strong>Captain Nemo<\/strong>, as they bring together two dangerous titans in hopes of eliminated both of them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Travis Hiltz<\/strong>: &#8220;The Treasure of the Ubasti&#8221; (from <em>Tales<\/em> #6) has S\u00e2r traveling India in the &#8220;Behemoth,&#8221; a steam-powered elephant. With him is American <strong>Dr. Henry Jones<\/strong>, and along the way they met <strong>Mowgli<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Josh Reynolds<\/strong>: &#8220;The Swine of Gerasene&#8221; (from <em>Tales<\/em> #10) is an interesting tale that teams up S\u00e2r with two other occult detectives: <strong>Algernon Blackwood<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>John Silence<\/strong>, and <strong>Carnacki<\/strong>. They go up against <strong>M.R. James<\/strong>&#8216; <strong>Count Magus<\/strong> and the &#8220;swine things&#8221; from <strong>William Hope Hodgson<\/strong>&#8216;s &#8220;House on the Borderland.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Matthew Baugh<\/strong>: &#8220;The Gargoyles of Notre-Dame&#8221; (from <em>Shadow of Judex<\/em>) <strong>Judex<\/strong> (a French silent movie character who resembles <strong>The Shadow<\/strong> whom I&#8217;ve reviewed before) teams up with S\u00e2r in fighting gargoyles.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Hiltz: &#8220;The Hounds of Saint-Augustin&#8221; is set in Paris, where some invisible creature or creatures are tearing up people. S\u00e2r works with <strong>Inspector Maigret<\/strong> and <strong>Korak<\/strong> to find them and eliminate this threat before more are killed.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Baugh: &#8220;What Rough Beast&#8221; (from <em>Tales<\/em> #7) set during World War I, Judex teams up with S\u00e2r and <strong>Hugo Danner<\/strong> (early American superman who may have influenced <strong>Doc Savage<\/strong> and <strong>Superman<\/strong>) against a supernatural threat.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Micah Harris<\/strong>: &#8220;Slouching Towards Camulodunum&#8221; is a two-part story (in <em>Tales<\/em> #7 and 8) in his series staring <strong>Becky Sharp<\/strong> (from <em>Vanity Fair<\/em>, the novel not the magazine). This time she meets S\u00e2r and must deal with <strong>Richard Upton Pickman<\/strong> (<strong>H.P. Lovecraft<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Dennion: &#8220;A Tale of Two Souls&#8221; has S\u00e2r working to save <strong>Dr. Henry Jekyll<\/strong> after <strong>Edward Hyde<\/strong> has summoned the Cenobites.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Roman Leary<\/strong>: &#8220;The Evils Against Which We Strive&#8221; (from <em>Tales<\/em> #4) has S\u00e2r teaming up with The Shadow.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Baugh: &#8220;Ask Me a Riddle&#8230;&#8221; is a sequel to the author&#8217;s earlier story, which has S\u00e2r in a final conflict with the villain behind that one: the sinister <strong>Dokter Von Meyer<\/strong> (from <strong>Seabury Quinn<\/strong>&#8216;s <strong>Jules de Grandin<\/strong> series). After his fellow occult detectives (including de Grandin, <strong>Duc de Richleau<\/strong>, and others) are injured in a prior conflict with Von Meyer, S\u00e2r engages the assistance of <strong>Gregory George Gordon Green<\/strong> \u2014 or &#8220;Gees&#8221; \u2014 in finding and confronting him.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>Stuart Shiffman<\/strong>: &#8220;True Believers&#8221; (from <em>Tales<\/em> #10) has S\u00e2r working to rescue the grandchild of his associates, with the assistance of others including <strong>John J. Malone<\/strong> (lawyer created by <strong>Craig Rice<\/strong>), <strong>Kenneth J. Malone<\/strong> (created by &#8220;<strong>Mark Philips<\/strong>&#8220;) and the grandson of <strong>Morris Klaw, the Dream Detective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Like the <em>Tales of the Shadowmen<\/em> volumes, the sources of the places and characters are given in the back, listing their authors\/creators. It can be a bit tricky to track down some of the sources.<\/p>\n<p>Another great volume from Black Coat Press. If you&#8217;ve enjoyed past S\u00e2r Dubnotal stories, get this one.
