\"Tales“Tales of Masks and Mayhem,” originally published by Mystic Toad Press, is back in a new edition by Altus Press<\/a>. This collection reprints stories from Fading Shadow’s Double Danger Tales<\/em> zine, which focused on New Pulp<\/a> heroes or new stories of classic pulp heroes in the public domain.<\/p>\n

I wish they had indicated what issues these stories had appeared. Since they didn’t, here is the info.<\/p>\n

“Monarch of the Flame Madness” by Maxentius Andor Scarlatti<\/strong> appeared in Double Danger Tales<\/em> No. 14 and 15. It stars The Tarantula<\/strong>, a character in the style of The Spider<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

“Crimson Harvest” by Therese Drippe<\/strong> and Tom Johnson<\/strong> appared in Double Danger Tales<\/em> No. 31. It stars The Black Bat<\/a><\/strong>, a classic pulp hero.<\/p>\n

“The Grey Monk’s Justice” by John L. French<\/strong> appeared in DDT #<\/strong>44. It stars The Grey Monk<\/strong>, a character in style with The Shadow<\/a><\/strong>. Unlike most new hero pulps, this one is set in modern times. There was a collection of all The Gray Monk stories from Wild Cat Books, but it may be out of print.<\/p>\n

“Lunar League” by Lance Curry<\/strong> appeared in Double Danger Tales<\/em> No. 41. It had the classic pulp hero Secret Agent X<\/strong> going after another classic pulp hero, The Moon Man<\/a><\/strong>. The Moon Man was a Robin Hood<\/strong>-like character, stealing from the corrupt to give to the poor, and as such, was chased by the police.<\/p>\n

“Doc Atlas: Gorilla Killer” by Michael Black<\/strong> appeared in Double Danger Tales<\/em> No. 16. It stars Black’s Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong> pastiche, Doc Atlas<\/strong>. You can also get his Doc Atlas novel, “Melody of Vengence” and I’ve done a posting on Doc Atlas.<\/p>\n

“Hunter’s Moon” by Debra Delorme<\/strong> and Tom Johnson<\/strong> appeared in Double Danger Tales<\/em> No. 20. It pits Debra’s The Scarecrow<\/strong> against Johnson’s The Black Ghost<\/strong>. These are New Pulp<\/a> characters set in modern times.<\/p>\n

“The Night Hawk” by Will Murray<\/strong> appeared in Double Danger Tales<\/em> No. 50. It stars Murray’s Night Hawk<\/strong>, which is a Western-style character.<\/p>\n
