Pulpcon 35: Saturday’s auction and session audio

Audio files of Friday night’s panel discussion and Saturday’s guest of honor talk by Phil Klass are now available to listen to. Both run nearly an hour each, so find a comfortable seat.

Both are incredibly interesting, and Klass’ talk is particularly funny. I wish the guest of honor program with Ernest Chiriacka had included more talking. It essential was a slide show of pulp covers by the artist, with David Saunders talking briefly about them. Because of a hearing problem, Chiriacka didn’t offer much in the way of commentary during the slide show or afterward. Too bad.

As promised, here are the highlights of Saturday night’s auction (thanks to Chris Kalb for providing the coverage):
• Large reference photos by artist Walter Baumhofer, $10 and $20 each.
• Five photos of Baumhofer modelling for his own artwork, $65 (Chris won this).
• A lot of four high school magazines featuring early work of Baumhofer, $70 (Chris also won this).
• A rough pencil sketch by Raphael DeSoto, $80.
• A check signed by Edgar Rice Burroughs, $80.
• A duffel bag of 60 Western pulps, $130.
• Two lots of 15 Western pulps, $20 each.

“There were lots of pulps, but no big-ticket ones,” Chris said. “If you were buying pulps, you were getting great deals. Generally half the price you’d pay in the dealer room or better.”

But, he said, the item of the night was Walter Baumhofer’s wedding/honeymoon scrapbook. It had multiple bidders and when it sold for $525, there was a round of applause.
