Pulps

The man of … what?

We’re all familiar with copycats. Something becomes popular, and everyone tries to copy it. Back when the first Indiana Jones movie proved to be a smash, posters for every adventure B-movie copied the look of the hit movie’s poster.

This cover by Norman Saunders, at first glance, appears to be of Doc Savage.

Heck, even the packaging for the VHS tape of Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze mimicked Indy.

Then I saw this cover of Complete Detective (click on the image to see a larger version) on eBay. At first glance, I thought it was a Doc Savage pulp. It sure looks like the Man of Bronze.

(The cover of this August 1938 pulp was painted by Norman Saunders.)

I wonder how often pulp publishers aped the covers or characters from the most popular pulps to boost the sales of their own pulps?
