New York Times’ Sunday Book Review features a review of The Black Lizard Big Book of Pulps: The Best Crime Stories from the Pulps During Their Golden Age – The ’20s, ’30s & ’40s.

Critic Marilyn Stasio writes, “There’s guilty fun to be had in the snarling prose and vintage illustrations.” She suggests bypassing the “big guns” to start and looking for the joy that comes from reading stories by lesser-known writers, such as Steve Fisher. (For pulp fans, these so-called “lesser-known” writers won’t necessarily be so.)
The book also has gotten good buzz in various pulp newsgroups. I’ll have to add it to my want-list.
