Howard Hopkins: 1961-2012

Howard Hopkins
By now most of you have heard that pulp fan and author Howard Hopkins suffered a fatal heart attack last week (Jan. 12, 2012). He was 50.

New of Howard’s death hit the newsgroups and Facebook on Monday afternoon. (The holiday weekend didn’t give me a chance to post this sooner.)

It has been a very sad couple of months for the pulp community, with the losses of Rusty Hevelin, Glenn Lord and, now, Howard.

My connection with Howard was through email correspondence and newsgroups over the years and through his pulp fanzine, Golden Perils, and his reference books — his thorough look at The Avenger, The Grey Nemesis, and a collection of illustrations from The Shadow pulps, Shadowed Pages (produced with John Gunnison). Sadly, we never met face-to-face.

Laurie Powers, over at her Wild West blog, has a nice collection of links to tributes to Howard. There’s also an article about Howard on The Portland (Maine) Press Herald‘s website.

Our condolences to his wife, family and friends.
