When we last saw our intrepid vine-swinger on screen, he was in a very short-lived TV series on the WB almost 10 years ago. But it looks as if Tarzan may be returning to theaters.
Sophia Savage, over at Thompson on Hollywood, is reporting that Harry Potter director David Yates is in talks to direct a new Tarzan movie for Warner Bros. Read more here.
I don’t remember seeing more than a short portion of the 2003 TV series. Nor have I seen more than a few clips of the Disney animated Tarzan from 1999. Same with Tarzan and the Lost City, from 1998 with Casper Van Dien.
Turning the clock back a bit further, I always thought 1984’s Greystroke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes, was a pretty enjoyable film version. (We won’t mention Tarzan the Ape Man from 1981 starring fellow Mississippi State alumni Miles O’Keeffe and Bo Derek.)
Of course, there were movie rumors back in 2011. But has the 100th anniversary of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ creation spurred renewed interest outside the pulp world? Let’s hope so. It would be nice to see the whole series of books being reprinted again for a new generation to discover.
Let’s hope this Burroughs adaptation fares better than John Carter.
