For a bit of creepy fun in a pulp gift, why not consider a movie based on an H.P. Lovecraft story?
The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has a pair of films — “The Call of Cthulhu” and “The Whisperer in Darkness” — that would make great gifts.
“Call” is a black-and-white, silent film done in an expressionistic style from the 1920s. “Whisperer,” still in black-and-white, looks as if it’s a talky from the 1930s. While they are adaptations of Lovecraft stories, don’t expect literal ones. There are some changes to better suit a film. But both are perfect for an evening of shivers.
“Call” is available as a DVD ($20); while “Whisperer” has both a DVD ($24.50) or a Blu-Ray disc ($27.50). Posters, t-shirts and soundtrack CDs can be added to the gift. To order, visit the HPLHS store.
