I got a laugh out of this “Tarzan of the Apes Playset and Diorama” that turned up in my RSS reader earlier this week.
Tim Knight posted a number of photos of the set on his Hero Press blog. He had this to say: “If I’d had this playset as a youngster (hell, if I had it now!) my entire life would revolve around recreating the story of Tarzan of the Apes and spinning off my own imaginary adventures.”
The photo above shows the grown Apeman with members of the Great-Ape tribe.
But what really made me laugh was the photo below. Tim accurately describes it as “a frighteningly detailed recreation of the hut where Tarzan’s parents died (including their rotting corpses), complete with the cot containing the skeleton of the infant ape that young Tarzan was swapped for by the ape that raised him.”
Clearly this is someone’s modern-day, custom-built collection, not some long-lost playset from years ago (as it is described in the original post on Calvin’s Canadian Cave of Cool blog). I can’t imagine this was a kid’s toy.
Either way, it’s a pretty interesting set.
First, thank you for reading HeroPress 😉
Second, just found this link to what appears to be another copy of this set, making me think it is/was a playset: https://www.facebook.com/groups/ERBzine/permalink/896134357102679/
Hi, Tim,
I’ve been reading your blog for years, all through its changes.
Thanks for posting the link to the ERBzine page on Facebook. Wow, that’s a pretty extensive diorama.
