Disney’s homage to the pulps

Here’s an interesting item that hit the interwebs yesterday: Disney has announced its next animated film, Strange World. (Not to be confused with Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds.)

Disney Animation posted the following, along with the concept art above, on its Twitter feed: “FIRST LOOK: Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Strange World, journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await. Directed by Don Hall, co-directed and written by Qui Nguyen, and produced by Roy Conli, Strange World arrives November 23, 2022.”

That’s not a whole lot of information, but from the quote and the concept art, it could be a lost-world/hollow-earth-type of adventure story. Pellucidar, anyone?

The creative staff has a strong background (Raya and the Last Dragon, Big Hero 6, Dispatches From Elsewhere, etc.), so that’s promising. While they weren’t involved in The Incredibles and The Adventures of Tintin, I always thought those movies showed that you can make a great animated film based on stories from the pulps.

We’ll find out next Thanksgiving.
