Well, maybe not everyone.<\/p>\n<p>While science fiction didn&#8217;t start out in the pulps, they certainly played a key part of its development and growth in popularity.<\/p>\n<p>But that connection can be hard to visualize. Not any more.<\/p>\n<p>Brooklyn artist and educator <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wardshelley.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ward Shelley<\/strong><\/a> has made it easier for everyone to see the pulps&#8217; role in the development of science fiction. His &#8220;History of Science Fiction&#8221; \u2014 a massive, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=LovecraftHP\">H.P. Lovecraft<\/a><\/strong>-looking illustration \u2014 depicts the genre&#8217;s development in detail. (Ward describes it as &#8220;the figure of a tentacled beast, derived from H.G. Wells&#8217; <em>War of the Worlds<\/em> Martians.&#8221; HPL comes first to my mind, maybe because I&#8217;ve been reading a bit of his stories lately.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Shelley&#8217;s work is a winning entry in the <a href=\"http:\/\/scimaps.org\/submissions\/7-digital_libraries\/10maps+quotes.html\" target=\"_blank\">2011 Places &amp; Spaces &#8220;Science Maps as Visual Interfaces to Digital Libraries&#8221; competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Shelley&#8217;s history runs from the twisting tentacles of &#8220;fear and wonder&#8221; in the beginning to &#8220;new space opera&#8221; between the lifeless eyes of the illustration&#8217;s head. The central artery \u2014 running from &#8220;gothic novels&#8221; through the head \u2014 contains the pulps and their predecessor penny dreadfuls and dime novels, with veins branching off leading to specific magazines (<em><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=AmazingStories\">Amazing Stories<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=WeirdTales\">Weird Tales<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=AstoundingScienceFiction\">Astounding Science Fiction<\/a><\/em>) and pulp fictioneers (<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BurroughsEdgarRice\">Edgar Rice Burroughs<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=GernsbackHugo\">Hugo Gernsback<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=CampbellJohnW\">John W. Campbell<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=SmithDoc\">E.E. &#8220;Doc&#8221; Smith<\/a><\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>Judges comments about the informational graphic include: &#8220;This inventive hand-drawn concept map draws the viewer into an engaging and instructive visual dialogue with the subject matter.&#8221; And &#8220;the map reminds me of the importance that human interpretation can have in casting information into an appealing visual framework.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/images\/historyofsciencefiction-big.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[1007]\">Take a look at it yourself<\/a>.
