Most of them are used paperbacks that I picked up here and there over the years. I wasn\u2019t looking for pristine copies but reading ones, so many have creases and markings on them.<\/p>\n<p>The other day I started noticing that quite a few had someone else\u2019s name written inside the cover or on the first page. I never wrote my name in my books, I guess because I never loaned them to anyone. (I learned my lesson when I let a classmate borrow a dozen or so early number <em>Doc<\/em> paperbacks near the end of the school year, then never saw him or the books again.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->So then, I started looking through my other <em>Doc<\/em> reading copies. Atwood<\/strong> of Marion, Ill.; \u201cThe Living Fire Menace\u201d (#61) \u2013 oh, he included his full address and telephone number.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Gerald Tilley<\/strong> of E. Carondelet, Ill.; \u201cThe Submarine Mystery\u201d (#63).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Mike Higgins<\/strong>; \u201cThe Freckled Shark\u201d (#67) \u2013 though, he thoughtfully scratched his name out in ink.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Robert L. Janogle<\/strong> (not sure of the spelling); \u201cThe Mountain Monster\u201d (#84) \u2013 he rated the book \u201cgood\u201d under his name and a \u201cSept. 2 76\u201d dating.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Robert L.<\/strong>, again, but maybe the last name is Jeenogle; \u201cThe Metal Master\u201d (#72) \u2013 also rated \u201cgood\u201d with the date of \u201cNovember 28, 1975.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Robert<\/strong>, well, maybe his last name is Kenogle; \u201cThe Vanisher\u201d (#52).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Robert Kenogle<\/strong>, that\u2019s certainly what it looks like this time. Unless it\u2019s Icenogle \u2013 nah, that looks odd; \u201cThe Midas Man\u201d (#46) \u2013 also rated \u201cgood.\u201d  (I didn\u2019t realize I had so many of his books. Hope he\u2019s not been looking for them.)<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Robert<\/strong>, again, but this time it looks like Luenogle; \u201cMurder Melody\u201d (#15) \u2013\u2020also rated \u201cgood.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Mark Fogarty<\/strong> of Rutherford, N.J.; \u201cThe Squeaking Goblin\u201d (#35) \u2013 he stamped his name and address in the book; a separate stamp has the date of \u201cMar 25 1969.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Greg Danforth<\/strong>, who attended Southwest Junior High; \u201cThe Terror in the Navy\u201d (#33) \u2013 I suspect he also owned my copy of \u201cThe Motion Menace\u201d (#64) because both have the same red Cancer astrological sign stamped on the first page.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Greg Danforth<\/strong>; \u201cThe Sea Angel\u201d (#49) \u2013 it also has the same red Cancer sign stamped in it.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>James Harper<\/strong>; \u201cLand of Always Night\u201d (#13).<\/p>\n<p>While other books had used bookstore names stamped in them:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<strong>The Book Exchange<\/strong> of La Crosse, Wis.; \u201cThe Pirate\u2019s Ghost\u201d (#62).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>The Booktrader<\/strong> of Bellleville, Ill.; \u201cThe Submarine Mystery\u201d (#63).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Book Bazaar<\/strong> of Lakeland, Fla.; \u201cThe Red Terrors\u201d (#83).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Nice Price Books<\/strong>; \u201cDust of Death\u201d (#32).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Admiral\u2019s Books and Magazines<\/strong> of Largo, Fla.; \u201cThe Sea Magician\u201d (#44) \u2013 I used to live near Largo, but don\u2019t remember buying any books from an Admiral\u2019s store.<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Columbus Book Exchange<\/strong> of Columbus, Ga., as well as a Seagull Books stamp; \u201cMeteor Menace\u201d (#3).<br \/>\n\u2022\u00a0<strong>Columbus Book Exchange<\/strong>, again, but I guess those pesky Seagull Books folks didn\u2019t get their hands on this book; \u201cFortress of Solitude\u201d (#22).<\/p>\n<p>That took about 15 minutes, but I didn\u2019t go through all of my <em>Doc<\/em> paperbacks. What surprised me was the number of duplicate owner\u2019s names. I had no idea that had occurred. I guess I bought several books together at one location. (But most of my used <em>Doc<\/em> book purchases have been since the late \u201980s; before that they were mostly new books.)<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s neat to think that all of these books were read and, most likely, enjoyed by these kids just after they were published. Just like me, they were buying them off the paperback racks, eager for the next <em>Doc Savage<\/em> adventure they could find.<\/p>\n<p>I hope the <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpBlogs\/YellowedPerils\/?p=6\">Nostalgia Ventures editions<\/a> find as many interested young readers as my old paperbacks have.
