You find them in movies, television, comics and novels. But are there \u201cinside references\u201d in the pulps?<\/p>\n

Captain Future from 1939<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

You know what I mean: an allusion to names, people or events that the average reader may not get, but those on the \u201cinside\u201d pick up on.<\/p>\n

While recently reading Captain Future and the Space Emperor<\/em>, I came across a character named Kenneth Lester. That got me wondering…<\/p>\n

The Space Emperor<\/em>, the first in the Captain Future<\/a> series, was published in 1939. The captain is clearly a literary descendant of Doc Savage<\/a>: Raised scientifically to combat evil, seeks adventure, is a master of every scientific field, chums around with a pair of bickering associates who are really best friends, etc. So was \u201cKenneth Lester\u201d a sly reference to the author of Doc Savage<\/em>, a blend of the names Kenneth Robeson<\/a> and Lester Dent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Could it be that author Edmond Hamilton<\/a> slipped this name into the story as an acknowledgement of the influence of Doc on the captain? If that\u2019s the case, I wonder how many other \u201cinside\u201d references appear in pulp stories that most of us don\u2019t realize?<\/p>\n
