{"id":1465,"date":"2011-08-18T10:21:51","date_gmt":"2011-08-18T17:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/?p=1465"},"modified":"2011-08-18T10:41:53","modified_gmt":"2011-08-18T17:41:53","slug":"pulp-stories-among-npr-top-100","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2011\/08\/18\/pulp-stories-among-npr-top-100\/","title":{"rendered":"Pulp stories among NPR top 100"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While caught up in <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2011\/08\/06\/making-room-for-new-pulp\/\" title=\"Making room for \u2018new pulp\u2019\">an unexpected uproar<\/a> last week, I missed the release of NPR&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/08\/11\/139085843\/your-picks-top-100-science-fiction-fantasy-books\" target=\"_blank\">Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books<\/a>.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media.npr.org\/assets\/img\/2011\/06\/17\/sci-fi-summer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[1465]\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/media.npr.org\/assets\/img\/2011\/06\/17\/sci-fi-summer.jpg?resize=200%2C153\" title=\"NPR Top 100 Science Fiction and Fantasy Books\" class=\"alignright\" width=\"200\" height=\"153\" \/><\/a>Well, it really wasn&#8217;t NPR&#8217;s picks; rather, listeners and visitors to the NPR website nominated and voted on the top books. A &#8220;panel of experts&#8221; \u2014 <strong>John Clute<\/strong>, <strong>Farah Mendelsohn<\/strong> and <strong>Gary K. Wolfe<\/strong> \u2014 sorted through the nominees and weeded out those that didn&#8217;t meet the criteria.<\/p>\n<p>NPR set <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2011\/06\/24\/137249678\/best-science-fiction-fantasy-books-you-tell-us\" target=\"_blank\">five guidelines<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> You could nominate only five titles per post.<\/li>\n<li>No young-adult or children&#8217;s titles.<\/li>\n<li>No horror or paranormal romance titles.<\/li>\n<li>It was okay to nominate a series.<\/li>\n<li>That meant a series of books, not simply books by the same author or on the same topic.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I was happy to see pulp stories represented among the top 100 books. (That sort of goes against the general notion that stories in the pulp magazines weren&#8217;t very good, doesn&#8217;t it? But we all knew that anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>Here are the books that originated in the pulps, where they ranked and their authors:<\/p>\n<ol type=\"1\">\n<li value=\"8\">\u201cThe Foundation Trilogy,\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=AsimovIsaac\"><strong>Isaac Asimov<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li value=\"16\">\u201cI, Robot,\u201d by Asimov<\/li>\n<li value=\"27\">\u201cThe Martian Chronicles,\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BradburyRay\"><strong>Ray Bradbury<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li value=\"68\">\u201cThe Conan the Barbarian Series,\u201d by <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=HowardRobertE\"><strong>Robert E. Howard<\/strong><\/a> (<strong>Mark Schultz<\/strong> is also credited here, but he was the illustrator in some of the newer editions.)<\/li>\n<li value=\"91\">\u201cThe Illustrated Man,\u201d by Bradbury<\/li>\n<li value=\"94\">\u201cThe Caves of Steel,\u201d by Asimov<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Did I miss any others?<\/p>\n<p><em>(Tip of the hat to <strong>Mike Glyer<\/strong> over at <a href=\"http:\/\/file770.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">File 770<\/a>.
