Here&#8217;s another one&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>The game<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2012\/03\/john-carter-game.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"lightbox[1704]\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2012\/03\/john-carter-game-detail.jpg?resize=200%2C146&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" title=\"John Carter: Warlord of Mars game box\" width=\"200\" height=\"146\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1707\" \/><\/a>Back in the 1970s, we used to play strategy board games. Around the same time, I had been reading <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/BurroughsEdgarRice\"><strong>Edgar Rice Burroughs<\/strong><\/a>&#8216; Mars series so I couldn&#8217;t resist buying the &#8220;John Carter: Warlord of Mars&#8221; game when Simulations Publications Inc. (SPI) issued it in &#8217;79.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe game was designed by <strong>Mark Herman<\/strong>. Other credits include: graphic design by <strong>Redmond A. Simonsen<\/strong>; game development by <strong>Eric Goldberg<\/strong>; and cover illustration by <strong>Don Maitz<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2012\/03\/john-carter-game-set.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"lightbox[1704]\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2012\/03\/john-carter-game-set-detail.jpg?resize=200%2C148&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" title=\"John Carter: Warlord of Mars game\" width=\"200\" height=\"148\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1708\" \/><\/a>There&#8217;s a 16-page booklet, <em>The World of Barsoom<\/em>, by <strong>Scott B. Bizar<\/strong> that gives an overview of Burroughs\u2019 Mars.<\/p>\n<p>As you can see by the photos (click to enlarge them), it doesn&#8217;t look very used. I remember playing it at least once.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since then, the game has been tucked away in a box or, more recently, in a closet in a bookcase with pulps and pulp-related paperbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Ah, well, back it goes.<\/p>\n<h4>A book (or two)<\/h4>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t posted as many John Carter entries as graphic designer <strong>Scott Dutton<\/strong> has. Dutton, of Edmonton, Canada, has quite a number on his blog at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catspawdynamics.com\/blog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Dutton Illustration &#038; Design<\/a>. His entries focus on the various illustrators who have taken pen or brush to paper to depict the warlord of Mars.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.catspawdynamics.com\/john-carter-of-mars-return-to-barsoom\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2012\/03\/return-to-barsoom.jpg?resize=200%2C287&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" title=\"Return to Barsoom\" width=\"200\" height=\"287\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1717\" \/><\/a>If you look on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catspawdynamics.com\/ebooks\/\" target=\"_blank\">his eBooks page<\/a>, you&#8217;ll find <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catspawdynamics.com\/john-carter-of-mars-return-to-barsoom\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Return to Barsoom<\/em><\/a>, a novel written by Dutton based on the Barsoom series. It&#8217;s a free book available in either ePub or MOBI formats.<\/p>\n<p>Dutton attempts, among other things, \u201cto reconcile ERB\u2019s Barsoom (his name for Mars), with what we know about Mars in the real world. The juxtaposition of the two worlds I thought would help make Barsoom\u2019s world more accessible to new readers, and for people who knew Barsoom the challenge to their assumptions would bring a freshness to their experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(There&#8217;s also an ePub version of Burroughs&#8217; original John Carter novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catspawdynamics.com\/ebooks\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Princess of Mars<\/em><\/a>, featuring the illustrations of <strong>Frank E. Schoonover<\/strong> from the A.C. McClurg &#038; Co. book of 1917.)<\/p>\n<h4>A website<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thejohncarterfiles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The John Carter Files<\/a> has popped up to support the release of Disney&#8217;s <em>John Carter<\/em> movie, and encourage the studio to proceed with a sequel. The site is backed by independent filmmaker <strong>Michael Sellers<\/strong>&#8216; Q Media Assets.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;ll find quite a lot of information about the movie, Barsoom, Burroughs, as well as photo galleries and videos from the movie. There&#8217;s also <a href=\"http:\/\/thejohncarterfiles.com\/video-the-john-carter-fan-trailer\/\" target=\"_blank\">a page about the fan-edited trailer<\/a> (embedded below) put together by Sellers and <strong>Mark Linthicum<\/strong> using previously released scenes.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" type=\"text\/html\" width=\"430\" height=\"182\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-BxeHQY1NuM\" frameborder=\"0\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>Quite a bit better than the trailers actually released by Disney, wouldn&#8217;t you say?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Okay, I&#8217;ve been on a string of John Carter posts of late because of the movie&#8217;s release.
