(The <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-info\/pulp-history\/\">pulp magazines<\/a> had enough lurid material by themselves, thank you.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_229\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-229\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-229\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2010\/08\/cheesypaperback.jpg?resize=150%2C254&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"A cheesy paperback cover; it is &lt;em&gt;not&lt;\/em&gt; a pulp.\" width=\"150\" height=\"254\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-229\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A cheesy paperback cover; it is not a pulp.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s such that whenever someone asks me about my hobby, I say that I\u2019m interested in popular fiction magazines from the mid-century. If I said, \u201cOh, I like reading and collecting pulps\u201d (as I have on occasion), most everyone assumes I\u2019m talking about those lurid paperback books.<\/p>\n<p>(Okay, I\u2019ll stop using the word \u201clurid.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p>This confusion also makes it difficult to search for pulp magazine listings on eBay. You constantly wind up with listings for &#8220;pulp sleaze&#8221; paperbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the stories published in those cheap paperbacks \u2014 with themes ranging from teen rebels, girls-gone-bad, gay and lesbian, and noirish crime \u2014 should more properly be called \u201cpulp-like fiction,\u201d rather than \u201cpulp fiction.\u201d (But that would make for a convoluted title for Quentin Tarantino\u2019s flick.)<\/p>\n<p>Maybe just \u201ccheesy paperback\u201d would fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p>Call me a \u201cpulp purist\u201d if you\u2019d like. But to me, \u201cpulp\u201d is strictly fiction published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=PulpMagazines\">pulpwood magazines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 William<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I blame the paperbacks.
