{"id":263,"date":"2007-04-07T17:13:38","date_gmt":"2007-04-08T00:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpBlogs\/YellowedPerils_test\/?p=263"},"modified":"2007-04-07T17:13:38","modified_gmt":"2007-04-08T00:13:38","slug":"age-of-reprints","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2007\/04\/07\/age-of-reprints\/","title":{"rendered":"Age of reprints"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a group of us from last year\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpBlogs\/YellowedPerils\/index.php?&amp;category=41\">PulpCon<\/a> walked through the World War I section of the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, <strong>Bill Mann<\/strong> asked if I\u2019d read any of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=HoganRobertJ\">Robert J. Hogan<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=RedFalconThe\">The Red Falcon<\/a> series. \u201cNo,\u201d I had to admit. I&#8217;ve not read much in the way of air war pulps, except a few stories of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=GeeEight\">G-8<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ageofaces.home.att.net\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a>Bill highly recommended them. Clearly those stories have been on Bill\u2019s mind recently. He has started a pulp-reprint publishing imprint, <a href=\"http:\/\/ageofaces.home.att.net\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Age of Aces Books<\/a>, and introduced its first book, <em>Captain Babyface: The Complete Adventures<\/em>. <!--more-->It\u2019s a collection of stories about Capt. Jed Garrett, a pilot for the American Special Agent\u2019s Corps with the unflattering nickname of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=CaptainBabyface\">Captain Babyface<\/a>. The 10 stories, which appeared in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=DareDevilAces\">Dare-Devil Aces<\/a><\/em>, were written by <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=FisherSteve\">Steve Fisher<\/a> who is probably best known for his hard-boiled fiction in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BlackMask\">Black Mask Magazine<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_267\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-267\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-267\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2010\/08\/captainbabyface.jpg?resize=150%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Captain Baby Face\" width=\"150\" height=\"225\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-267\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Captain Baby Face<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI always loved the air war pulps, especially <em>Dare-Devil Aces<\/em>,\u201d Bill says. \u201cThere were some terrific hero series that ran in short stories or novellettes throughout the \u201930s and \u201940s. Characters like The Red Falcon, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=ChineseBrady\">Chinese Brady<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=SmokeWade\">Smoke Wade<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=ThreeMosquitoesThe\">The Three Mosquitoes<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=ClipperStark\">Clipper Stark<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI decided that others might enjoy reading them also without going through the time and expense of tracking down the original magazines. So I started Age of Aces Books to do just that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Joining him in the venture are <strong>Chris<\/strong> and <strong>David Kalb<\/strong> (who also were on the Air Force Museum excursion last summer). \u201cI was thrilled to have Chris join up with me in this new venture&#8230;. We also recruited Chris&#8217;s brother David to help us out in future releases,\u201d Bill says.<\/p>\n<p>Why Captain Babyface? \u201cI started with <em>Dare-Devil Aces<\/em> for two reasons,\u201d Bill said via e-mail. \u201cFirst, that&#8217;s where many of the characters I enjoyed the most were printed. And second, the copyright status was clear. It was just a matter of getting permission from Argost Communication to reprint them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith \u2018Captain Babyface,\u2019 (Fisher) tells the tales of Jed Garrett and his dog Click the hellhound as they battle the evil German genius Mr. Death. It is World War I, and Death has been horribly disfigured by American bombs. He has sworn vengeance against all Americans, but especially Babyface Garrett. The 10 stories appeared throughout 1936.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Next up for Age of Aces Books is a four-volume reprinting of The Red Falcon series. \u201cI already have in the pipeline a collection of The Three Mosquitoes stories (and) Chinese Brady stories,\u201d Bill says.<\/p>\n<p>Boy, it\u2019s a terrific era for pulp magazine fans, with so many reprinting pulp stories.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013\u00a0William<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a group of us from last year\u2019s PulpCon walked through the World War I section of the U.S. Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Bill Mann asked if I\u2019d read any of Robert J.
