{"id":2796,"date":"2013-08-08T15:26:06","date_gmt":"2013-08-08T19:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/?p=2796"},"modified":"2013-08-08T15:26:06","modified_gmt":"2013-08-08T19:26:06","slug":"the-shadow-may-1-1942","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2013\/08\/08\/the-shadow-may-1-1942\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;The Shadow&#8217; (May 1, 1942)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/08\/mobsmen-on-the-spot.jpg?resize=200%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Shadow #3: The Mobsmen on the Spot\" width=\"200\" height=\"333\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/08\/mobsmen-on-the-spot.jpg?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/08\/mobsmen-on-the-spot.jpg?resize=180%2C300&amp;ssl=1 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>It&#8217;s not one of the icon covers from Street &#038; Smith&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/the-links\/theshadow\/\">The Shadow<\/a><\/em> pulp.<\/p>\n<p>But ever since it turned up on the paperback racks in 1974 on the cover of Pyramid Book&#8217;s &#8220;The Shadow #3: The Mobsmen on the Spot,&#8221; I&#8217;ve considered this <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpartists.com\/Rozen,G.html\" target=\"_blank\">George Rozen<\/a><\/strong> painting a prime example of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/category\/pulps\/great-pulp-art\/\">Great Pulp Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Rozen&#8217;s painting originally appeared on the cover of &#8220;The Northdale Mystery&#8221; (<em>The Shadow<\/em>, May 1, 1942).<\/p>\n<p>George Rozen painted dozens and dozens of covers for <em>The Shadow<\/em> beginning with the January 1932 number and continuing through the Feb. 15, 1939, number. (His brother, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpartists.com\/Rozen,J.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jerome Rozen<\/a><\/strong>, painted three of the first five covers of the pulp in 1931.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpartists.com\/Gladney.html\" target=\"_blank\">Graves Gladney<\/a><\/strong> picked up the brush following George Rozen in 1939, through the Sept. 15, 1941, number. That&#8217;s when Rozen returned for a second stint through Feb. 15, 1944. (Rozen would be called back to duty for <strong>The Shadow<\/strong>&#8216;s final four pulp-sized issues in 1948 and &#8217;49.)<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/08\/shadow-420501.jpg?resize=500%2C682&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"The Shadow (May 1, 1942)\" width=\"500\" height=\"682\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/08\/shadow-420501.jpg?w=500&amp;ssl=1 500w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/08\/shadow-420501.jpg?resize=220%2C300&amp;ssl=1 220w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Whereas a lot of the most popular covers of magazine portray The Shadow in a more symbolic nature \u2014 as puppet master or posing with death&#8217;s skeleton or casting a shadow \u2014 this painting captures the action like <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2010\/03\/12\/why-we-wont-be-satisfied-with-pulp-movies\/\">a frame from a movie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the camera angle. The noir-ish lighting. The power in The Shadow&#8217;s punch. The reeling bad guy.<\/p>\n<p>Boy, I&#8217;d love to go pull out the DVD or fire up Netflix to watch the movie that&#8217;s playing in my mind&#8217;s eye right now. Ah, well.
