He died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, following a stroke earlier in the month.<\/p>\n<p>He was 87.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning in 1951 \u2014 just as pulp magazines were fading away \u2014 Leonard had short stories and novels published in <em>Argosy<\/em>, <em>Dime Western Magazine<\/em> and <em>10 Story Western Magazine<\/em>, among others.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->His short story, &#8220;Three-Ten to Yuma,&#8221; which ran in the March 1953 number of <em>Dime Western<\/em>, was turned into a classic film western in 1957 starring <strong>Glenn Ford<\/strong> and <strong>Van Heflin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After the pulps, Leonard turned to men&#8217;s adventure and slick magazines, and books. He began writing full-time in 1961. Of his nearly 50 novels, 26 were turned into movies or TV shows. &#8220;Hombre,&#8221; &#8220;Mr. Majestyk,&#8221; &#8220;Get Shorty&#8221; and &#8220;Out of Sight&#8221; may be more widely known as movies than novels.<\/p>\n<p>Though born in New Orleans on Oct. 11, 1925, Leonard spent most of his life in Detroit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Before he found fame from crime fiction novels and films, Elmore Leonard was a pulp magazine author.
