{"id":2886,"date":"2013-09-02T20:04:56","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T00:04:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/?p=2886"},"modified":"2013-09-03T16:09:18","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T20:09:18","slug":"frederik-pohl-1919-2013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2013\/09\/02\/frederik-pohl-1919-2013\/","title":{"rendered":"Frederik Pohl: 1919-2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2013\/09\/frederik-pohl.jpg?resize=75%2C108&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Frederik Pohl\" width=\"75\" height=\"108\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2888\" \/>Sadly, another pulp fictioneer is gone.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.frederikpohl.com\" target=\"_blank\">Frederik Pohl<\/a><\/strong> died Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at the age of 93.<\/p>\n<p>His granddaughter <strong>Emily Pohl-Weary<\/strong> reported <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/emilypohlweary\/status\/374628088791175168\" target=\"_blank\">his passing on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pohl was one of the founders of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Futurians\" target=\"_blank\">Futurians<\/a>, a science-fiction fan group in New York, in the 1930s, and published an SF fanzine, <em>Mind of Man<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->His first professionally published work was a poem, &#8220;Elegy to a Dead Satellite: Luna,&#8221; which appeared in the October 1937 number of <em>Amazing Stories<\/em> under the pseudonymous credit of <strong>Elton Andrews<\/strong>. He continued writing short stories and novels for the SF pulps, including <em>Astounding, Super Science Stories, Astonishing Stories<\/em> and <em>Planet Stories<\/em>, throughout the 1940s and &#8217;50s.<\/p>\n<p>In 1939 at age 19, Pohl landed the job of editor of <em>Astonishing Stories<\/em> and <em>Super Science Stories<\/em> for Popular Publications. He also edited the digests <em>Galaxy<\/em> and <em>If<\/em> for 10 years beginning in 1959. Pohl&#8217;s last novel, &#8220;All the Lives He Led,&#8221; was published in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>In 1993, Pohl was named a Science Fiction Writers of America Grand Master, and inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame in 1998.
