{"id":327,"date":"2007-09-11T14:22:26","date_gmt":"2007-09-11T21:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpBlogs\/YellowedPerils_test\/?p=327"},"modified":"2007-09-11T14:22:26","modified_gmt":"2007-09-11T21:22:26","slug":"pulp-art-comes-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/2007\/09\/11\/pulp-art-comes-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Pulp art comes to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lurid covers come to life on the highly saturated TV screen, thanks to the recently released DVD documentary, <a href=\"http:\/\/pulpfictionart.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Pulp Fiction Art: Cheap Thrills &amp; Painted Nightmares<\/em><\/a> (Kultur International Films).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kulturfilms.com\/files\/28273935.wmv\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_331\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-331\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-331\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2010\/08\/pulpfictionart-dvd.jpg?resize=150%2C219&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Pulp Fiction Art\" width=\"150\" height=\"219\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pulp Fiction Art<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The paintings are the primary subject though <em>Pulp Fiction Art<\/em> also traces the history of the pulp magazines from newspaper serials to penny dreadfuls to <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=ArgosyThe\/edit\"><em>Argosy<\/em><\/a> and through the pulp boom and the economic bust of the Depression and on through the decline and demise of the pulps. Old footage and narrator-read accounts tell the story.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve read the book <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpFiles\/general.html#PulpArt\"><em>Pulp Art<\/em><\/a> or are familiar with the pulp paintings from the Robert Lesser collection, you\u2019ll recognize most of the works shown in the 57-minute film. There are no surprises in that regard. But the careful editing and montages make the paintings jump to life.<\/p>\n<p>Taking the lead from documentarist Ken Burns, the pulp paintings zoom in and out, and pan around to emphasize key portions of the works.<\/p>\n<p>For example, early in the film, Lesser describes the rationale for creating these wild pulp covers: The allure they had with readers, particularly boys.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere is this beautiful, young girl, blonde, in dire trouble,\u201d Lesser says. \u201cShe&#8217;s being attacked by this terrible guy. And you\u2019re going to save her, and she, of course, is going to be very, very grateful to you and show you in as many ways as a woman can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As he says this, the screen starts with a shot of the hero, pans and zooms in tight on the girl in distress, then pulls out to reveal the whole scene with the villain holding a blowtorch. The painting, by <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=SaundersNorman\">Norman Saunders<\/a>, originally ran as the cover of a 1938 issue of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=TenStoryDetective\"><em>Ten Story Detective<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to Lesser, pulp historian Robert Weinberg, Hard Case Crime publisher Charles Ardai, pulp-artist-turned-portraitist <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=KintslerEverettRaymond\">Everett Raymond Kintsler<\/a> and other modern-day commentators look back at the pulps throughout the film.<\/p>\n<p>But the real treats for the serious pulp fan are the interviews with pulpsters Saunders, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=DeSotoRafael\">Rafael DeSoto<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=ChiriackaErnest\">Ernest Chiriacka<\/a>. They provide a first-hand look at life during the pulp age.<\/p>\n<p>To illustrate what Lesser describes as \u201ca Holocaust of American culture\u201d \u2013 the destruction of most of the original pulp cover paintings \u2013 DeSoto recalls not even wanting his paintings back. \u201cNo, I didn\u2019t, and I must say that I was very foolish enough not to even sign them because I had an idea when I was young that I would be a gallery artist, a fine artist.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, those paintings had but one use at the time: to sell magazines. Once their job was done, they weren\u2019t of much value to pulp publishers, or many of the artists, any longer. Most were destroyed, tossed out with the trash or painted over.<\/p>\n<p>If you enjoy looking at the covers of pulps as much as reading them, then <em>Pulp Fiction Art<\/em> is a worthy addition to your pulp reference library.
