(The receipt is still tucked away in the back of the book.) I say first copy, because when the book was re-released in 2007, I bought a second copy.

I enjoyed reading the book and discovering a number of pulp heroes that, at the time, I was unfamiliar with. How were you introduced to the pulps?

I was an early comic book fan so the leap to pulps was not a giant one, particularly since those pioneer comic books were basically pulps with pictures. My first pulp collection came instantly when a friend of my father passed on a whole box of The Shadow mags, which my father promptly passed on to me.

I was familiar with The Shadow from radio and from the Street & Smith comic books, but there was something special about the pulp Shadow that won me over instantly. It was love at first sight so I soon discovered the appeal of other types of pulps, becoming a dedicated fan of the sf and fantasy and mystery pulps, among others, throughout the 1940s and beyond.

2.
