That issue actually would have been hitting newsstands a month early, in March.<\/p>\n<p>For those counting along at home, that would be 88 years ago this year.<\/p>\n<p>While Hugo Gernsback&#8217;s portmanteau &#8220;scientifiction&#8221; didn&#8217;t stick around that long (nor did Gernsback at the magazine, for that matter), <em>Amazing Stories<\/em> remained in print &mdash; first as a pulp, then as a digest &mdash; through 1995, and sporadically through 2005.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Last year, it resurfaced as an online magazine at <a href=\"http:\/\/amazingstoriesmag.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AmazingStoriesMag.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Read publisher <strong>Steve Davidson<\/strong>&#8216;s tribute &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/amazingstoriesmag.com\/2014\/03\/happy-88th-birthday-amazing-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\">Happy 88th Birthday, <\/a><em><a href=\"http:\/\/amazingstoriesmag.com\/2014\/03\/happy-88th-birthday-amazing-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\">Amazing Stories<\/a><\/em>!&#8221; at the website.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">&#9632;&nbsp;&#9632;&nbsp;&#9632;<\/div>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/DeCampLSprague\">L. Sprague de Camp<\/a><\/strong> &mdash; I&#8217;ve enjoyed his science-fiction works, such as &#8220;Lest Darkness Fall,&#8221; &#8220;The Wheels of If,&#8221; and &#8220;Genus Homo.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But mention his name in some pulp circles and you&#8217;ll incur the wrath of <strong>Crom<\/strong>, thanks to de Camp&#8217;s &mdash; <em>ahem<\/em> &mdash; editing of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/HowardRobertE\">Robert E. Howard<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s original <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/Conan\">Conan<\/a><\/strong> stories for reprint in the 1960s. (<strong>Taranich<\/strong>&#8216;s blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/theblogthattimeforgot.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Blog That Time Forgot<\/a>, links to <a href=\"http:\/\/theblogthattimeforgot.blogspot.com\/2012\/06\/de-camp-controversy-essential-reading.html\" target=\"_blank\">a series on the de Camp controversy<\/a> that <strong>Morgan Holmes<\/strong> wrote back for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rehupa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">REH United Press Association website<\/a> in 2008.)<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.anageundreamedof.com\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Shanks<\/a><\/strong> posted a link to &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/onanunderwood5.blogspot.com\/2014\/01\/an-odd-encounter.html\" target=\"_blank\">An Odd Encounter<\/a>&#8221; from the blog <a href=\"http:\/\/onanunderwood5.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">On an Underwood No. 5<\/a> on Facebook the other day. In a post, <strong>T. Bryan Vick<\/strong> recounts a meeting with a REH fan afflicted with de Camp&#8217;s editing.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\" style=\"padding-bottom:10px;\">&#9632;&nbsp;&#9632;&nbsp;&#9632;<\/div>\n<p>Lastly, if you&#8217;re in the market for paperbacks (and hopefully some pulps), check out the 35th annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.la-vintage-paperback-show.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles Vintage Paperback Collectors Show<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday, March 16; admission is $5. The show is at the Glendale Civic Auditorium (a big change from the run-down Guest House Inn in Mission Hills, where the show was held for many years).
