Benecker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/Adventure\">Adventure<\/a><\/em> is often called the greatest of the pulp magazines because of its excellent fiction. <em>Time<\/em> magazine dubbed it the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,755214,00.html\" target=\"_blank\">No. 1 pulp<\/a>&#8221; in 1935, upon <em>Adventure<\/em>&#8216;s 25th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p><em>Adventure<\/em> first appeared in November 1910 and continued as a pulp for 753 issues, until March 1953. (After that, it segued into a run-of-the-mill men&#8217;s adventure magazine.)<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its acclaimed stories, <em>Adventure<\/em> also featured <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/category\/pulps\/great-pulp-art\/\">Great Pulp Art<\/a> on many of its covers.<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s installment features the September 1913 number of <em>Adventure<\/em>. It&#8217;s not your typical pulp cover.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2014\/03\/adventure-1309.jpg?resize=549%2C785&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Adventure (September 1913)\" width=\"549\" height=\"785\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3505\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2014\/03\/adventure-1309.jpg?w=549&amp;ssl=1 549w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2014\/03\/adventure-1309.jpg?resize=210%2C300&amp;ssl=1 210w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 549px) 100vw, 549px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The painting lacks the usual action, replacing it with subtle humor. It also lacks the billboard of blurbs for the stories inside. The cover is a nice respite from the lurid, with the face on the simple, white canvas jumping out at you from the newsstand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gerrit A. Benecker<\/strong> painted it. A few years later, he would become well known for inspirational posters during World War I. (His most famous, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/item\/2002708892\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sure! We&#8217;ll Finish the Job<\/a>,&#8221; for the war bond effort sold more than 3 million copies.)<\/p>\n<p>Benecker produced over 150 covers for magazines as diverse as <em>Adventure<\/em>, <em>Scientific American<\/em> and <em>Harper&#8217;s Weekly<\/em>, and another 500 fine art paintings (he excelled in portraits) during his career. He died at age 52 in 1934.<\/p>\n<p>He painted at least one other <em>Adventure<\/em> cover for the Sept. 1, 1917, number &mdash; a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philsp.com\/data\/images\/a\/adventure_191709n1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"lightbox[3504]\">similarly circular image<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I may have to revisit <em>Adventure<\/em> in a future installment of <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/category\/pulps\/great-pulp-art\/\">Great Pulp Art<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adventure is often called the greatest of the pulp magazines because of its excellent fiction.
