Here\u2019s what Ron posted on the PulpMags group at Yahoo:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Nick Carr<\/strong> phoned <strong>Tom Johnson<\/strong> (Monday night) to report that <strong>Helen Deveny<\/strong> had called him to say that Frank Hamilton was in the nursing home and in really bad shape. I know a lot of you have admired Frank\u2019s art for many years.<\/p>\n<p>Frank Hamilton is one of pulp fandom&#8217;s greatest artists ever. I\u2019m sure most of you \u201cold-timers\u201d either knew him, or have seen his art&#8230; Frank himself doesn\u2019t expect to get well enough to ever leave the nursing home. I can provide a phone number and address to anyone wanting to send him a \u201cGet Well\u201d Card&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 Ron Hanna<br \/>\nWild Cat Books<br \/>\n<a href=\"m&#97;&#x69;&#x6c;t&#111;&#58;&#x77;&#x69;l&#100;&#99;&#x61;&#x74;_&#98;&#x6f;&#x6f;&#x6b;s&#64;&#x79;&#x61;h&#111;&#111;&#x2e;&#x63;o&#109;\">&#x77;&#x69;&#x6c;&#x64;&#x63;&#x61;&#x74;&#x5f;&#x62;&#x6f;&#x6f;&#x6b;&#x73;&#x40;&#121;&#97;&#104;&#111;&#111;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To echo what Ron wrote, the 88-year-old Frank Hamilton isn\u2019t someone I\u2019ve personally met or corresponded with, but he\u2019s reached out to me, and mostly likely to many of you, through his carefully crafted homages to the pulps.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_380\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-380\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2007\/11\/frankhamilton82-large.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"lightbox[375]\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2010\/08\/frankhamilton82.jpg?resize=150%2C204&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Frank Hamilton, self-portrait 1982\" title=\"Frank Hamilton, self-portrait 1982\" width=\"150\" height=\"204\" class=\"size-full wp-image-380\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-380\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Frank Hamilton, self-portrait 1982<\/figcaption><\/figure>His work has appeared in at least one issue of just about every pulp zine published since the 1980s and in numerous reference books and chapbooks. His most-common illustrating style \u2013 pen-and-ink stippling \u2013 makes his work stand out and highlights the painstaking care he must have taken in crafting his artwork.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a self-portrait, at left, he did in 1982 for the debut issue of the Johnsons\u2019 zine <em>Echoes<\/em> called \u201cThe Bloody Seven.\u201d (Click the image to see a larger version.)<\/p>\n<p>In that debut issue, <strong>Ginger Johnson<\/strong> wrote a profile of Hamilton, which the Johnsons have graciously granted permission to excerpt here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shortly before World War II, Frank Hamilton gave all his copies of <em>The Shadow<\/em> and <em>Doc Savage<\/em> pulps to his boyhood chum, <strong>Charles T. Barner<\/strong>, who also had a considerable number of <em>The Shadows<\/em>. The years passed and memories of the pulps faded, as did his interest in art. When Bantam re-issued Doc Savage in 1964, a spark of nostalgia was struck, but these paperbacks were all that Frank could find to help revitalize his feelings for the pulps.<\/p>\n<p>Frank remembers telling 14-year-old Brian, one of his sons, about The Shadow, The Spider and the others, and stressing vehemently that <strong>James Bama<\/strong>\u2019s Doc Savage was an imposter, and wishing that he still had the Walter Baumhofer poster so he could show Brian the <em>real<\/em> Doc Savage!<\/p>\n<p>In 1968, Charles Barner found about 38 <em>Shadows<\/em> that had escaped the paper drives of the war, and gave them to Frank. Most were coverless, but they were more than enough to get him into his own little, private, one-man fandom&#8230; or so he thought. He dug the old paint box out and started copying the covers that were there. He soon developed an appetite for more pulps as his paintings turned out well, considering the years he had been away from it. The artwork he considers most natural for him is black and white stippling; he is very apprehensive about doing oils, but I think he does a fantastic job with any style.<\/p>\n<p>Frank gradually bought a number of <em>Doc Savage<\/em> pulps, but really wanted only those with <strong>Baumhofer<\/strong> covers. He now has all the Baumhofer\u2019s from issue #1 to Baumhofer\u2019s last in 1936.<\/p>\n<p>Frank was also buying <em>The Shadows<\/em>, through the mail, from all over the country until be only needed three to have the complete run of 325. He finally managed to achieve number one, \u201cThe Living Shadow.\u201d Later on he would receive, as a gift from Jack Deveny, the two remaining <em>Shadows<\/em> that completed his set.<\/p>\n<p>In 1970 or 1971, Frank was introduced to the fanzine <em>Pulp<\/em>, by <strong>Bobby Van<\/strong>, who he met in a book store in New York. He subscribed and found names and addresses of fellow collectors&#8230; fans, like himself. He would never be the only pulp collector again! In fact,  <em>Pulp<\/em> was where he made his fanzine debut. In the fourth issue he had published, anonymously, a small sketch of Captain Fury, followed by another of Doc Savage in the fifth issue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bob Weinberg<\/strong> then asked to use one of his Shadow drawings on the cover of <strong>Frank Eisgruber<\/strong>\u2019s <em>Gangland\u2019s Doom<\/em>. Frank sent Weinberg two drawings which were well accepted. They also brought a letter, a phone call and an autographed copy of <em>Gangland\u2019s Doom<\/em> from <strong>Walter B. Gibson<\/strong>; who he later met in New York in 1975 and again at Frank\u2019s own home in 1976.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As I said at the outset, our thoughts go out to Frank Hamilton. I should add that he also deserves our <em>thanks<\/em>. He\u2019s contributed greatly to pulp fandom over the years.
