Lovecraft<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last month I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/sep\/17\/world-fantasy-awards-hp-lovecraft-racism-row-statuette\" target=\"_blank\">read about the controversy<\/a> surrounding the statuette of <strong>H.P. Lovecraft<\/strong> given to winners of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldfantasy.org\" target=\"_blank\">World Fantasy Awards<\/a>. At issue is racism in Lovecraft&#8217;s writings.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nnedi Okorafor<\/strong>, who won the 2011 best novel World Fantasy honors, wrote about the racism in <a href=\"http:\/\/nnedi.blogspot.com\/2011\/12\/lovecrafts-racism-world-fantasy-award.html\" target=\"_blank\">a blog post back in December 2011<\/a>. You have to admit that the Lovecraft poem that she reprints to illustrate the point is particularly offensive. (Yes, I realize that literature is reflective of the era in which it was created. But there is a limit to what is acceptable today.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Since then, author <strong>Daniel Jos\u00e9 Older<\/strong> has started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/the-world-fantasy-award-make-octavia-butler-the-wfa-statue-instead-of-lovecraft\" target=\"_blank\">an online petition<\/a> asking that Lovecraft&#8217;s visage be replaced with that of the late author <strong>Octavia Butler<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The controversy went a bit more mainstream over the weekend when <strong>Arun Rath<\/strong>, a host of NPR&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/programs\/all-things-considered\/\" target=\"_blank\">All Things Considered<\/a>,&#8221; talked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.salon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Salon<\/a>&#8216;s <strong>Laura Miller<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/10\/04\/353737040\/horror-of-horrors-is-h-p-lovecrafts-legacy-tainted?utm_source=facebook.com&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=npr&amp;utm_term=nprnews&amp;utm_content=202405\" target=\"_blank\">about the issue<\/a>.
