In addition to the requisite scientific gadgets, onboard will be an archival mini-DVD put together by the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetary.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Planetary Society<\/a>. It\u2019s made of silica glass and, as the society\u2019s Web site says, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.planetary.org\/programs\/projects\/international_mission_participation\/messages\/phoenix_dvd.html\" target=\"_blank\">Phoenix DVD<\/a> is \u201cdesigned to last hundreds if not thousands of years into the future.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_479\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-479\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-479\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2010\/08\/astounding5409.jpg?resize=150%2C213&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Astounding Science Fiction, September 1954\" width=\"150\" height=\"213\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-479\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Astounding Science Fiction, September 1954<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Contained within the disc are video messages from a variety of notables including <strong>Carl Sagan<\/strong> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=ClarkeArthurC\">Arthur C. Clarke<\/a>. There also are samples of how popular culture has depicted the Red Planet, including collections of vintage radio shows, Mars artwork and stories.<\/p>\n<p>The pulp magazines played a significant role in the development of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=FantasyGenre\">science fiction<\/a> (in fact, the term was coined in them). Naturally, the pulps are well represented on the DVD.<\/p>\n<p>In the artwork and stories categories, you\u2019ll see numerous names that you\u2019ll recognize from the pulps, including fictioneers <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BrackettLeigh\">Leigh Brackett<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=DerlethAugust\">August Derleth<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=MooreCL\">C.L. Moore<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=KlineOtisAdelbert\">Otis Adelbert Kline<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=SturgeonTheodore\">Theodore Sturgeon<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=WilliamsonJack\">Jack Williamson<\/a>, and artists <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=PaulFrankR\">Frank R. Paul<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=EmshwillerEd\">Ed Emshwiller<\/a>. (Oh, and one of this year\u2019s PulpCon guests of honor, <strong>Larry Niven<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>Among the specific works included on the DVD are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=AndersonAllen\">Allen Anderson<\/a>\u2019s illustration for <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BrackettLeigh\">Leigh Brackett<\/a>\u2019s <em>Queen of the Martian Catacombs<\/em>, which appeared in the Summer 1949 number of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=PlanetStories\"><em>Planet Stories<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=FreasFrankKelly\">Kelly Freas<\/a>\u2019s cover from the September 1954 number of <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=AstoundingStories\"><em>Astounding Science Fiction<\/em><\/a> illustrating <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BrownFredric\">Fredric Brown<\/a>\u2019s <em>Martians, Go Home!<\/em> and featuring the quintessential little green man (above, left).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0Fredric Brown\u2019s story <em>The Last Martian<\/em>, which appeared in <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=GalaxyMagazine\"><em>Galaxy<\/em><\/a> in October 1950.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0An excerpt of <em>A Princess of Mars<\/em> by <a href=\"http:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/wikka.php?wakka=BurroughsEdgarRice\">Edgar Rice Burroughs<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One thing\u2019s for certain: If the spacecraft lands safely, the Phoenix DVD will last a lot longer than the crumbling, yellowed pages honored on it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; William<\/p>\n<p><strong>Update:<\/strong> The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/news\/phoenix\/main.php\" target=\"_blank\">Phoenix craft<\/a>, with the DVD, landed safely on Mars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m constantly surprised by how often you can find a pulp connection in the oddest places.
