Well, you may have missed voting in 2014 on what to name the daughter of web developer <strong>Stephen McLaughlin<\/strong>. But a bunch of <strong>H.P. Lovecraft<\/strong> fans didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>The website <em>Vox<\/em> rounds up &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/news\/british-columbia\/parents-pass-on-cthulhu-for-daughters-name-after-online-vote\/article18135817\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boaty McBoatface and the history of internet naming fiascos<\/a>.&#8221; McLaughlin&#8217;s poll is among the list. The con was organized by fans to celebrate the science fiction of the pulps.<\/p>\n<p>Fans <strong>Myrtle Rebecca Douglas Smith Gray Nolan<\/strong>, also known as <strong>Morojo<\/strong>, and <strong>Forrest J Ackerman<\/strong> dressed as characters from the future in costumes made by Morojo. The costumes were pretty simple by today&#8217;s standards.<\/p>\n<p>The article, by <strong>Jennifer Culp<\/strong>, goes into more details about cosplay, its history, and Morojo.<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.racked.com\/2016\/5\/9\/11451408\/cosplay-inventor-morojo-myrtle-r-douglas\"><p>\nFor more than 10 years <strong>Morojo<\/strong> (<strong>Myrtle R. Douglas<\/strong>) and (<strong>Forrest J<\/strong>) <strong>Ackerman<\/strong> were an inseparable, intellectually compatible dream duo, and 1939 was an especially big year for the pair: they started their first major zine together, jointly financed the publication of teenage <strong>Ray Bradbury<\/strong>\u2019s first sci-fi zine, and attended the first-ever World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) wearing &#8220;futuristicostumes&#8221; straight out of the 1936 <strong>H.G. Wells<\/strong> movie <span style=\"font-style:normal;\">Things to Come<\/span> &mdash; the FIRST FAN COSTUMES EVER WORN IN RECORDED HISTORY.<\/p>\n<p>Handsome Forrie cut a dashing figure in his giant shoulder pads and breeches, tiny Morojo\u2019s ball gown converted into a ROMPER with a CAPE, and every other attendee who wasn\u2019t busy hatin\u2019 on \u2019em for out-fanning the rest of the world started planning their own costumes for next year.<\/p>\n<p>Morojo and Ackerman shook the newly developing geek culture to its core with those costumes, laying the foundation for a hobby that would become a majorly significant expression of fandom before the 20th century was out.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5878\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5878\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/05\/william-schallert-1.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"lightbox[5001]\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/05\/william-schallert-1.jpg?resize=200%2C3006&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"William Schallert\" width=\"200\" height=\"3006\" class=\"size-large wp-image-5878\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5878\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">William Schallert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>SCHALLERT ON SF<\/strong>: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Schallert\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">William Schallert<\/a><\/strong> was a familiar face on TV from the 1950s through the &#8217;90s. He played <strong>Patty Duke<\/strong>&#8216;s father on <em>The Patty Duke Show<\/em> and <strong>Dobie Gillis<\/strong>&#8216; teacher on <em>The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis<\/em>. He died this week at the age of 93.<\/p>\n<p>SF fans might recognize him from his role in <em>Star Trek<\/em>&#8216;s classic &#8220;The Trouble With Tribbles,&#8221; and later in a <em>Star Trek: Deep Space Nine<\/em> episode. Back in 2011, Schallert talked with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.startrek.com\/article\/william-schallert-remembers-nilz-baris-and-varani\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StarTrek.com<\/a> about the episodes, where he briefly touched on his early interest in sf pulps:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I was not a <span style=\"font-style:normal;\">Star Trek<\/span> fan. I didn\u2019t watch the show. I used to be big on reading science fiction. I used to read a magazine called <span style=\"font-style:normal;\">Astounding Science Fiction<\/span>, but I stopped doing that around 1948. I remember the year because that was the year <strong>L. Ron Hubbard<\/strong> wrote a piece for <span style=\"font-style:normal;\">Astounding Science Fiction<\/span> called \u201cDianetics,\u201d and that was the beginning of Scientology. It was launched in <span style=\"font-style:normal;\">Astounding Science Fiction<\/span>. He used to write space operas, as they called them. He was not terribly good at it, I didn\u2019t think. We had some pretty good writers, <strong>Asimov<\/strong> and <strong>Heinlein<\/strong>, and people like that who were really talented writers. But he was not one of them.
