It&#8217;s been a busy month.<\/p>\n<p>By the time you&#8217;re reading this, this year&#8217;s issue of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/PulpWiki\/PulpsterThe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pulpster<\/a><\/em> will be in the hands of the printer and being prepped for debut in a few weeks at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PulpFest 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a post coming up next week on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PulpFest<\/a> website giving a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpfest.com\/2016\/07\/highlights-from-the-pulpster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rundown of what&#8217;s in the zine&#8217;s 25th issue<\/a>, and how you can get your copy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As usual around this time each year, <em>The Pulpster<\/em> consumes much of my &#8220;pulp&#8221; time. But now that it&#8217;s at the printers, I can turn my attention back to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/\">ThePulp.Net<\/a><\/strong> and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\">Yellowed Perils<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, onto some <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/category\/pulpbits\/\">Bits of Pulp<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TIME AGAIN FOR TARZAN<\/strong>: Warner Bros. releases <em><a href=\"http:\/\/legendoftarzan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Legend of Tarzan<\/a><\/em> tomorrow. Jackson as George Washington Williams star in <em>The Legend of Tarzan<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This new version stars <strong>Alexander Skarsg\u00e5rd<\/strong> in the title role, <strong>Margot Robbie<\/strong> as <strong>Jane Porter<\/strong>, <strong>Samuel L. Jackson<\/strong> as <strong>George Washington Williams<\/strong>, and <strong>Christoph Waltz<\/strong> as <strong>Capt. Rom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The previews look promising, and comments by some on Facebook who have seen it have been positive. But Rotten Tomatoes gives it a meager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/the_legend_of_tarzan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">26 percent fresh<\/a> based on (as of this writing) 31 reviews.<\/p>\n<p>One of the ongoing criticisms of the film is that it&#8217;s out of step with modern sensibilities regarding Africa. <strong>Dave Schilling<\/strong> has a column &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2016\/jun\/29\/the-legend-of-tarzan-flaws-africa-colonialism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">King of the bungle: Why Tarzan will never be OK<\/a>&#8221; at <em>The Guardian<\/em> that looks at Tarzan and colonialism. And, he writes, &#8220;What people fail to realize is that these characters are intrinsically, hopelessly dated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s another column, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/entertainment\/movies\/tarzan-fan-aren-left-article-1.2693090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Me Tarzan fan, but there aren&#8217;t many of us left as old heroes like the Lord of the Jungle and The Lone Ranger fade<\/a>.&#8221; It appeared today on the <em>New York Daily News<\/em> website by <strong>Ethan Sacks<\/strong>. He takes a look at how Tarzan as well as other &#8220;pulp&#8221; characters have fared in the movies in recent years. Sacks tries to keep it positive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/06\/bronze-gazette-76.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"lightbox[5014]\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/06\/bronze-gazette-76.jpg?resize=194%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"&#039;The Bronze Gazette&#039; No. 76\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5018\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/06\/bronze-gazette-76.jpg?resize=194%2C300&amp;ssl=1 194w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/06\/bronze-gazette-76.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>Yes, the stories by <strong>Edgar Rice Burroughs<\/strong> do paint Africa and its people unflatteringly by today&#8217;s standards. But let&#8217;s hope the current film&#8217;s producers have taken steps to remedy those concerns, and that not all pulp characters are dated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BRONZE GAZETTE, PART II<\/strong>: I hope you&#8217;ve received your copy of <em>The Bronze Gazette<\/em> No. 76. Mine arrived in the mail last week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Brown<\/strong>, our resident <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/2016\/06\/29\/the-new-bronze-gazette\/\">Pulp Super-Fan<\/a>, provides a brief overview of the issue over on <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulpsuperfan\/2016\/06\/29\/the-new-bronze-gazette\/\">his blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And <strong>Scott Dennis Parker<\/strong> has a nice tribute to the fanzine at his blog, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/scottdennisparker.com\/2016\/06\/21\/the-charm-of-the-bronze-gazette\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Writing from the Quadrant<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The fellows at <a href=\"http:\/\/pulplications.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PULPlications<\/a> &mdash; <strong>Chuck Welch<\/strong>, <strong>Terry Allen<\/strong>, and <strong>Kez Wilson<\/strong> &mdash; have done <em>The Bronze Gazette<\/em> founder&#8217;s <strong>Howard Wright<\/strong> well in continuing his 25-year labor of love.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whew.
