But, you know, it makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>If you enjoy <em>Star Wars<\/em> as a sweeping epic, then you should consider reading the Foundation series. The first three novels &mdash; <em>Foundation<\/em>, <em>Foundation and Empire<\/em>, and <em>Second Foundation<\/em> &mdash; were originally serialized in <em>Astounding<\/em> during the 1940s and early &#8217;50s. The series is a bit talky, but entertaining nonetheless.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPEAKING OF READING:<\/strong> In addition to the books and pulps that I picked up at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulpfest.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PulpFest 2016<\/a>, several new items have appeared on my reading stack lately, so I thought I might mention them.<\/p>\n<p>&bull;&nbsp;<strong><em>Skelos<\/em> debuts:<\/strong> First off, is a new &#8220;Journal of Weird Fiction and Dark Fantasy&#8221; called <em>Skelos<\/em>. <strong>Mark Finn<\/strong>, <strong>Chris Gruber<\/strong>, and <strong>Jeffrey Shanks<\/strong> are editing the journal for Jeff&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/skelospress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Skelos Press<\/a> and are aiming for three issues a year.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up my copy of the first issue at last week&#8217;s gathering of Tallahassee pulpsters (a subset of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/southernpulpsters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Southern Pulpsters<\/a> group on Facebook).<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re a fan of <strong>Robert E. Howard<\/strong> or <strong>H.P. Lovecraft<\/strong> fiction, then there is plenty to read in this 150-plus page issue. It&#8217;s a mix of short fiction, novelettes, poetry, essays, reviews, and more.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/08\/the-shadow-in-review.jpg?resize=200%2C261&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"&quot;The Shadow in Review&quot;\" width=\"200\" height=\"261\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5183\" \/>&bull;&nbsp;<strong><em>The Shadow in Review<\/em>:<\/strong> There&#8217;s a new reference book on my shelves, and one that, as far as I&#8217;m concerned, has been sorely needed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Olsen<\/strong>, who writes the blog <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/thatspulp\/\">That&#8217;s Pulp!<\/a><\/em> for ThePulp.Net, has collected into a book the reviews of all 325 novels from <em>The Shadow Magazine<\/em> that he wrote for his former website <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/the-links\/theshadow\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Shadow<\/a><\/strong> in Review.<\/p>\n<p>The 500-page book, similarly named <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lulu.com\/shop\/john-olsen\/the-shadow-in-review\/paperback\/product-22786708.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Shadow in Review: The Ultimate Guide to the Pulp Magazine Series<\/a><\/em>, from John&#8217;s Pulplandia Press gathers the reviews in magazine publication order. He has rated them from zero to five based on their quality.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the hefty book are an overview of The Shadow, reviews of additional non-pulp exploits of The Shadow, and indexes of the stories and subjects (characters, locations, and objects).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve put the book on a handy shelf next to Bookery Fantasy&#8217;s, Adventure House&#8217;s, and <em>Blood &#8216;n&#8217; Thunder<\/em>&#8216;s guides to the pulps, <em>The Collector&#8217;s Handbook of Bronze<\/em>, and <em>The Shadow Scrapbook<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/08\/dare-devlin-brain-wreck.jpg?resize=200%2C310&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"&quot;Dare Devlin: Brain Wreck!&quot;\" width=\"200\" height=\"310\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-5184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/08\/dare-devlin-brain-wreck.jpg?w=200&amp;ssl=1 200w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/thepulp.net\/yellowedperils\/files\/2016\/08\/dare-devlin-brain-wreck.jpg?resize=194%2C300&amp;ssl=1 194w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>&bull;&nbsp;<strong><em>Brain Wreck!<\/em><\/strong> Not only is <a href=\"http:\/\/pulplications.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PULPlications!<\/a> putting out the new <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bronzegazette.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bronze Gazette<\/a><\/em>, it&#8217;s also publishing <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/the-hunt\/new-pulp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Pulp<\/a> books.<\/p>\n<p>One of its first is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/pulplications.com\/Pulp_001.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brain Wreck!<\/a><\/em>, a novel by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dyarstraights.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dafydd Neal Dyar<\/a><\/strong> featuring <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.daredevlin.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dare Devlin<\/a><\/strong>, his homage to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/the-links\/docsavage\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Doc Savage<\/a><\/strong>. (There&#8217;s also a secondary story, &#8220;Mechanized Death!,&#8221; included in the hardcover version of the book.)<\/p>\n<p>Dafydd has been a regular contributor of Doc Savage-related articles to pulp fanzines since the late 1970s, so he&#8217;s well prepared for writing a Man of Bronze pastiche. The lead novel pits Dr. Darius Dungannon Devlin and his five &#8220;Amazing Associates&#8221; against a brain-destroying foe from the Far East who is attacking U.S. troops.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s up to Devlin and gang to stop what may be a Japanese demon dressed in samurai armor who is controlling the Brain-Wrecker weapon.<\/p>\n<p>&bull;&nbsp;<strong><em>The Pulpster<\/em>:<\/strong> I can&#8217;t end without a quick plug for the latest issue of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulpster.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Pulpster<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thepulpster.com\/back-numbers\/number-25\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Issue number 25<\/a>, which debuted at <a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-info\/convention-coverage\/pulpfest-2016\/\">PulpFest 2016<\/a>, features a collection of essays by past editors of <em>Amazing Stories<\/em> in celebration of the magazines&#8217; 90th anniversary. There&#8217;s also a look at <strong>Philip Jos\u00e9 Farmer<\/strong>&#8216;s appearances in the magazine, as well.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the magazine is filled out with articles on <em>Detective Story Magazine<\/em>, <em>Western Story Magazine<\/em>, <em>Harlem Stories<\/em>, <em>The Whisperer<\/em>, <em>The Skipper<\/em>, and much more.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bits of pulp is an irregular feature of Yellowed Perils, and gives me a chance to touch upon a collection of items that popped up on my pulp radar recently.
