Pulp AdventureCon<\/a> returns to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for the third time on Saturday, Feb. 11, 2017. At the same time, it kicks off a new year of pulp conventions<\/a>, which typically culminates with November’s original Pulp AdventureCon in New Jersey.<\/p>\n

I’ve been lucky to attend the past two Florida gatherings, but due to scheduling conflicts, I sadly won’t be in Fort Lauderdale this year. A couple of our Florida contingent of Southern Pulpsters — Jeff Shanks<\/strong> and Mark Maddox<\/strong> — will be there. I’m hoping that I will be able to join them agian next year.<\/p>\n

Pulp AdventureCon runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Universal Palms Hotel<\/a>, 4900 Powerline Rd., Fort Lauderdale. But attendees staying at the hotel usually hold informal gatherings Friday night before the show, and Saturday evening afterward, and anyone who’d like to participate is welcome.<\/p>\n

The Florida con, now in its third year, features pulp magazines, of course, but also a variety of pulp culture collectibles, such as New Pulp<\/a> books, Golden Age comic books, Big Little Books, old-time radio and movie memorabilia, and more. (It’s also a great way to escape the winter weather; typical seasonal temperatures in Fort Lauderdale in February are highs in the upper 70s and lows in around 60.)<\/p>\n

Special guest this year will be Timely Comics artist Allen Bellman<\/a><\/strong>, who contributed to Captain America Comics, The Human Torch, Marvel Mystery Comics, Sub-Mariner Comics, All-Winners Comics<\/em>, and other Timely titles. (Timely, of course, would morph into Marvel Comics.) Bellman, a longtime South Florida resident, will be on hand to sign autographs and talk about Timely publisher Martin Goodman<\/strong> and his company’s comics and pulps.<\/p>\n

Also on the schedule is New Pulp author P.L. McCall II<\/a><\/strong>. In addition to his books, McCall also publishes an anthology series, Penny and Dime<\/em>.<\/p>\n
