id=\"caption-attachment-5886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ron Goulart<\/figcaption><\/figure><strong>Ron Goulart<\/strong>&#8216;s book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-bibliography\/pulps-in-general\/#goulart\">Cheap Thrills<\/a><\/em> was one of the first books I read that provided background into the pulp magazines back in the early 1970s.<\/p>\n<p>A bit later I read Warner&#8217;s <strong>The Avenger<\/strong> paperbacks and Avon&#8217;s <strong>Flash Gordon<\/strong> paperback series, not knowing that Goulart ghosted the later Avenger stories and the first four Gordon books until years later.<\/p>\n<p>Also, he edited <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-bibliography\/pulp-genre\/#goulart\">The Hardboiled Dicks<\/a><\/em>, an anthology of detective fiction from the pulps, and wrote <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-bibliography\/pulp-genre\/#goulart\">The Dime Detectives<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Goulart was hospitalized with pneumonia in December, and was suffering from dementia and difficulties swallowing, his wife, <strong>Frances<\/strong>, posted recently on Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday was his 89th birthday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark Evanier<\/strong> posted on his blog <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsfromme.com\/2022\/01\/14\/ron-goulart-r-i-p\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">News From Me<\/a><\/em> that Goulart died this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Goulart&#8217;s <em>Cheap Thrills<\/em>, along with Tony Goodstone&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thepulp.net\/pulp-bibliography\/pulps-in-general\/#goodstone\">The Pulps<\/a><\/em>, spurred on my interest in the history of the pulpwood magazines as much as reading stories
