A stack of pulp-related books have accumulated on the corner of my desk since last summer (before I took a hiatus on Yellowed Perils). A bunch of the books are old, but two new ones deserve a bit of recognition.<\/p>\n

\"Norman
Norman Saunders<\/figcaption><\/figure>First up is Norman Saunders<\/em><\/a>, David Saunders<\/strong>\u2019 tribute to his father. It\u2019s possibly the best book devoted to a pulp artist yet.<\/p>\n

At $40, it\u2019s not inexpensive, but what you\u2019re investing in is a 12-by-9.25-inch, 368-page hardback book (and an inch-and-a-half thick, though I don\u2019t judge a book by it\u2019s thickness) that\u2019s packed full of tremendous paintings displayed full page, or at least a quarter of a page. No thumbnails in this book.<\/p>\n

Though pulp covers were only a small portion of the elder Saunders\u2019 output, they are well represented here. A lot of pulp covers were the works of moderately talented folks. In this volume (if you hadn\u2019t already realized it), it\u2019s clear Saunders was a true artist.<\/p>\n

For fans of pulp cover art, Norman Saunders<\/em> is a book you shouldn\u2019t pass up.<\/p>\n

The Spider vs. The Empire State<\/figcaption><\/figure>Second is clearly a labor of love. Chris Kalb<\/a>\u2019s The Spider vs. The Empire State<\/em><\/a> for Age of Aces Books is one of the best pulp reprint books I\u2019ve seen.<\/p>\n

The book collects three stories from Popular Publication\u2019s The Spider<\/em> \u2013 \u201cThe City that Paid to Die,\u201d \u201cThe Spider at Bay\u201d and \u201cScourge of the Black Legion\u201d \u2013 that appeared in the September, October and November 1938 issues.<\/p>\n

A foreword by Thomas Krabacher<\/strong>, a professor at California State University, Sacramento, and a pulp collector, sets the scene for the Black Police trilogy by looking at current events during the 1930s. Profiles of Norvell Page<\/strong>, illustrator John Fleming Gould<\/strong> and cover painter John Newton Howitt<\/strong>, and a \u201cFurther Reading\u201d section wrap up the 428-page book. (It\u2019s over an inch thick, too. But, really, I don\u2019t generally go around measuring the thickness of books.)<\/p>\n

There are a number of The Spider<\/em> novels that have been repeatedly reprinted. This is the first time these three stories have appeared in print since the pulps hit the newsstands over 71 years ago. For $17, you\u2019ll be in for plenty of rousing pulp excitement.<\/p>\n
